København S
The Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a two-year associate professorship in English language to be filled by 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is funded by money from the Giese foundation.
Job content
The Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies teaches and conducts research into language, literature and society in Western Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada, Latin America and parts of Africa. The Department is a dynamic environment with a high level of personal interaction and a wide range of functions. It currently employs approx. 120 members of staff.
The purpose of the temporary associate professorship is to strengthen the teaching of English language at UCPH, more specifically at the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies. English language is to be understood in the broad sense of including language proficiency and applied linguistics as well as general linguistics and translation studies. The appointee will be expected to develop and conduct teaching activities (for example courses, seminars, workshops, webinars, e-learning resources etc.) within modern English language/linguistics, if possible as part of a combined teaching and research project.
The proposed teaching activities should supplement – not replace – the courses in English language that are already offered to students as part of the department’s regular BA and MA programmes. This should be understood either as activities that are not directly part of these programmes (i.e. as activities that do not earn ECTS) or as novel approaches to courses in the department’s programmes. Priority will be given to applicants whose teaching and research ideas (see below) will benefit not just the current students but also future students, for example through the development of new activities or novel teaching methods.
Qualification requirements
The successful applicant must document research in modern English language/linguistics. We particularly welcome applicants who take an applied or contrastive (Danish-English) approach to English language.
Applicants for associate professorships must have qualifications corresponding to at least the level attained on successful completion of an assistant professorship. They must be able to document the following:
• A minimum of four peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, at least one of them at level two; or a monograph as well as two articles, at least one of them at level two; or similar publications
• Advanced teaching qualifications: Teaching and Learning in Higher Education programme (or equivalent experience) and a teaching portfolio that documents varied pedagogical/didactic practice (both class instruction and individual or collective supervision) See also Educational Charter at http://www.humanities.ku.dk/about/vision_and_goals/educational_charter/ http://uddannelseskvalitet.ku.dk/quality-assurance-of-study-programmes/university-guidelines/pedagogic-basis-and-guidelines/
• Well thought-out plans outlining the proposed teaching and research projects. The research plans must include considerations concerning external dissemination. The teaching and development plans must include considerations concerning how the proposal will benefit the teaching of English language (for current and future students).
• Participation in relevant and strong Danish and international academic networks, preferably in both research and teaching.
• Good citizenship: interest in and commitment to the maintenance and enhancement of a collegiate community and an academic environment in which approaches to educational questions, the development of research and external contacts are based on solidarity.
All of the above-mentioned criteria must be met.
The duties of the position are evenly distributed on tasks related to teaching and development and tasks related to research (including relevant administration and knowledge-sharing). Hence the assessment of applicants’ qualifications will assign equal weight to documented competences in the field of teaching, pedagogy and didactics as in the field of research, research collaboration and research organization. Applicants with documentation of excellent teaching skills including experience with development of teaching and with experiences and reflections on how most effectively to integrate research and teaching activities will be given priority.
For further details about the qualification requirements for associate professors, please refer to the job structure for academic staff: http://ufm.dk/en/legislation/prevailing-laws-and-regulations/education/education-institutions
For further information about the position, please contact Head of Department, Tina Lupton, e-mail: [email protected].

Applicants may choose a maximum of five publications for assessment, of which at least three must have been published within the five years immediately preceding the deadline for applications. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and named from 1 to 5.
Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated.
