Description
Sociology at Karlstad University is a well-established intermediate-sized unit, which includes a PhD programme. The education and research profile is distinctly sociological, and lie at the forefront of the field. You will work closely with colleagues from many disciplines and have good opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration. The unit is quick to embrace new initiatives in education and research.
Sociology offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies. It includes a Bachelor’s programme in the social sciences: The Social Analysis Study Programme, and a Master’s (120 credits) programme: Critical Social Analysis. We have approximately 230 full-year and full-time students annually. The unit comprises a staff of 20, working with research, education, and external contacts. It is part of several national and international partnerships in education and research.
Research at the unit is primarily specialised in: 1. Power and resistance, 2. Personal life, emotions, and the organisation of everyday life, and 3. Sociology of ageing. We are open to the expansion and development of our research, including new research areas. The unit offers a PhD programme in Sociology, where some students are also part of the CRS research centre at Karlstad University.
Sociology is part of a multidisciplinary department that also includes Social Work, Psychology, and Gender Studies.
Duties
The primary duty is teaching in Sociology and Social Psychology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including freestanding courses and the study programmes; teaching on quantitative methods will likely be required. Other tasks include teaching, supervision, examinations, course coordination, and course development, as well as active participation in developing the unit, department, and faculty with regard to teaching, research, and community collaboration. You are expected to play an active role in the unit’s research, conduct your own research, and help secure external fund. Teaching undergraduates should make up no less than 20% of the position. Doctoral supervision and instruction may be required. Duties may also include teaching at other study programmes, such as Social Work, Psychology, and teacher education. Time allotted for professional development typically account for 20% of the working hours.
Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the position of senior lecturer, applicants must hold a PhD in Sociology (or equivalent). Pursuant to the Karlstad University Appointments Procedure, teachers must have the personal qualities required to perform the duties involved, as well as having completed a course on teaching in higher education. If not completed at the start of the employment, the course on higher education teaching may be completed within two years. For other eligibility requirements, refer to the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 4, and Karlstad University’s Appointments Procedure.
The position requires proficiency in Swedish and English. A candidate who does not meet this requirement may still be hired provided they are able to actively acquire these language skills.
Assessment criteria
Special weight will be given to the applicant’s strong command of spoken and written Swedish and English.
Considerable weight will be given to scientific and teaching skill in Sociology. Equal attention will be given to assessing teaching and scientific skills respectively.
Considerable weight will also be given to your social skills, such as the ability to cooperate, the ability to create good relations, initiative, and willingness to engage with others’ work.
Weight will be given to experience in research using and/or teaching about quantitative methods, as well as administrative, research and development communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with actors external to the university.
Terms
This is a permanent full-time position (100%) starting at the earliest convenience. A probationary period may be required.
