The Converter Electrical department is part of Vestas R&D organisation Power Solutions. The department is an essential contributor in making the current and future wind turbines more efficient and cost effective by developing the electrical power Converters in all Vestas wind turbines. This is done by being responsible for development and maintenance of the power electronics components according to the full value chain requirements. All Vestas products are based on internally developed converters since electrical power conversion is at the core of how a wind turbine performs, operates and interacts with the electrical grid.

The daily work will be within a broad network of stakeholders and together with the electrical specialists you will set the standard for tomorrows design. You will especially be interfacing to our gate driver designers, cooling system designers, electromechanical designers but also suppliers and other internal departments essential for our product development.

You will be a part of the power electronic team within the Converter Electrical & High Voltage department. The department consists of 17 highly skilled designers and specialists located in Aarhus.

Responsibilities
As Lead Engineer in Power Electronics, you will be a part of the Power Electronics team and report to the Converter Electrical Manager within Electrical Engineering. Your main focus will be Power electronic converters, with special focus on power semiconductor technology.

The position requires a deep knowledge of industrial power semiconductor technologies and working principles for use in relevant power and voltage class, together with deep knowledge of semiconductor physics of failure. The ideal candidate will have a good insight into semiconductor manufacturing principles and understanding of three-phase converters and their working principles.

  • Power semiconductor component selection for existing and future converter designs, and support of model development for use in system simulations wrt. electrical, mechanical and thermal conditions of the semiconductor
  • Electrical, thermal, mechanical design & analysis of power semiconductor component and its interface components plus testing component & assembly for verification and characterisation purposes
  • Supplier dialogue and qualification of suppliers’ technology, design and manufacturing, together with driving suppliers and contractors as integral partners in development
  • Reliability analysis and support the design of gate drivers
  • Support should-cost analysis of semiconductor devices and support sourcing team in supplier negotiations and supplier audits
  • Identify candidate future power semiconductor technologies and how to introduce in wind power converters
  • Review and assure quality in colleagues’ work, while coaching and guiding colleagues as well as delivering own contribution to projects

Qualifications

  • A relevant master’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of working experience with Power Electronic
  • Experience from electrical design and power electronics
  • Good leadership and communication skills and capable of acting as a motivator
  • Capable of defining the vision within the field of power electronic and driving activities supporting the vision
  • Capable of delivering short term results without losing the long-term vision

Additional information
Your work location will be at Vestas Power Solutions Headquarter in Aarhus, Denmark.

Up to 20 travel days per year can be expected.
