Frederiksberg C

The Department of Geosciences, the section of geography, invites applicants for two open PhD fellowships. The work addresses soil nutrient turnover and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agricultural landscapes influenced by transects in topography and management. The projects are embedded in the Center for Landscape Research in Sustainable Agricultural Futures (land-craft.dk), a pioneer center financed by Danish national and private research foundations.

Start date is 1st of December 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project

Food security, climate change and loss of biodiversity represent three of today’s major societal challenges. Agricultural activity and food production have severe impacts on the environment and climate, and there’s an urgent need to find new solutions to ensure a sustainable future. It is well documented that agricultural soil GHG emissions are strongly influenced by primary factors such as management, climate (mainly precipitation) and vegetation dynamics. Nevertheless, there’s still a gap in research activities to thoroughly investigate and map i) the influence of biogeochemical transects in the field (e.g. soil moisture controlled by topography or adjacence to streams) and ii) the soil vertical distribution and control of GHG production under different cropping species/cultivars with contrasting rooting architecture.

Project i) will focus on field work to establish high time resolution observations of soil GHG emissions and important drivers in agricultural fields influenced by contrasts in soil moisture regimes, e.g. controlled by topography and adjacence to streams. The work will in particular be associated with fine textured or organic soils in areas with shallow groundwater tables.

Project ii) will focus on agricultural cropping strategies for mitigating GHG emissions and explore the impact of root activity across transects in topography. The project will provide fundamental knowledge on how plant roots modify the conditions for GHG formation down through the soil profile.

Both candidates must have a strong interest in working outdoors in the field and feel dedicated to operating field instruments (automated chambers, gas laser, root cameras etc.). Data from the projects will be used for calibration and verification of biogeochemical models. The work will include stable isotope analysis in soil and gases to trace the GHG sources.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates with master’s degree in soil geo- or bioscience (e.g., soil science, agronomy, geography, biology, or environmental sciences). Fluency in spoken and written English is expected and the possession of driver’s license is recognized.

Our group and research- and what do we offer?

The projects are carried out in close collaboration with other scientists and PhD-candidates in Land-Craft center Aarhus and Copenhagen Universities as well as with collaborators in Germany and the US.

Working place will be in Copenhagen but within Land-CRAFT we prioritize collaboration across the involved groups thus visits to other involved partners is envisioned.

We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include state-of-the-art field- and laboratory facilities to study soil and environmental biogeochemistry.
