PhD Project in Phage Biology and Bacterial Immunity
Biology
Faculty of SCIENCE
University of Copenhagen
The Department of Biology, Section of Microbiology invites applicants for a PhD fellowship in Microbiology. The project is part of the research project “DISCOVIR: DISCOvery of anti-VIRal immune strategies in bacteria”, financed by a Villum Young Investigator grant.
Start date is expected to be December 1st 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
Phages are ubiquitous viruses that infect and kill bacteria. As a result, bacteria have evolved diverse anti-phage defense systems to protect themselves from infection, but the extent of the diversity of defense systems across environments and their molecular mechanisms remains largely unexplored. The position is part of a project funded by a Villum Young Investigator grant (Villum Fonden), which seeks to shed light on the co-evolution of phages and bacteria. This research is expected to enhance our understanding of bacterial immunity and could lead to advances in biotechnological applications, treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections, and models for studying immunity in humans and other organisms.
The selected candidate will conduct research in the Bacterial Immunity group led by Asst. Prof. Rafael Pinilla-Redondo at the Section of Microbiology, University of Copenhagen, in collaboration with Prof. Peter Fineran’s group at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. Responsibilities include engaging in advanced microbiology/molecular biology research and teaching/supervising students at the University of Copenhagen.
Who are we looking for?
Applicants should hold a MSc or equivalent degree in biology, biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field. Experience in phage biology, bacterial anti-phage defense mechanisms, and bioinformatics is highly preferred. In addition, the successful applicant will demonstrate:
Our group and research- and what do we offer?
The Bacterial Immunity Group at the University of Copenhagen is a dynamic and emerging research team within the Section of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of SCIENCE, located in the North Campus at KU (Universitetsparken 15, 2100 København). We are a close-knit team of 5-8 passionate researchers, with half of the team dedicated to wet lab work and the other focused on bioinformatics. Despite being a relatively new group, we stand out for our strong international research network and the impactful contributions we’ve already made to the field of bacterial immunity, including the discovery of the 1st RNA-based anti-CRISPRs (Racrs) 1, the discovery and characterization of plasmid-encoded type IV CRISPR-Cas systems 2, and the characterization of Retron anti-phage defense systems 3. We place a high value on frequent social activities and building international collaborations, offering a creative and stimulating environment that embraces diversity, with access to state-of-the-art microbiology laboratories and cutting-edge computational infrastructure.
Contact: Principal supervisor is Asst. Prof. Rafael Pinilla-Redondo, Dept. Biology, Section of Microbiology, [email protected].
