About the Natural History Museum of Denmark
Natural history museums have never been more important. The impact of climate change and anthropogenic forces on biodiversity has reached a critical point. We need action to build a more sustainable relationship with nature. The Natural History Museum of Denmark is the national museum for nature. We work to empower citizens to connect with nature with the aim to create positive change for life on Earth. We want to inspire, engage, and enable people to enjoy, understand, and care for the diversity of the natural world. We want to change the way people think about and use natural history museums.
We are currently building a new Danish national museum for nature. One large museum site, in the Botanical Garden, in the centre of Copenhagen, will host state-of-the-art laboratories, some of our outstanding research collections, new public galleries, and combined facilities for programming, education, and citizen science. The main parts of the collections will be housed in a yet-to-be-built main collection facility outside Copenhagen.
The botanical collections contain approximately 3.5 million specimens from all over the World, collected over a time span of 400 years. The herbaria hold many historically important collections, such as the Marcgrave, Forsskål and Isert & Thonning herbaria. The vascular plant collections comprise over 1.800.000 specimens, of which ca. 330.000 are from Denmark and 180.000 from Greenland, the rest being from the rest of the world. More than 20,000 specimens are registered as types. In addition to the classical herbarium specimens, the collections hold subcollections of seeds, wood, cones and other plant parts in glass and boxes. A small part of the specimens are stored in alcohol, e.g. the Seidenfaden Orchid Collection. The former herbarium at KVL, Herbarium CP, as well as the former Pharma collection, have been transferred to NHMD and are now incorporated into the botanical collections.
In addition to vascular plants, the NHMD botany section holds about 1.700.000 specimens of algae, mosses, lichens, and fungi.
Terms of salary and employment
The employment and salary are made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
Employment will be as academic employee.
The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.
