Within the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (MSCA), University of Copenhagen is offering one PhD position for a Doctoral Candidate (DC), commencing latest from 1 April 2024. The position is for 36 months and is funded by Horizon Europe.

NUTRIOME - Precision nutrition and postprandial immune responses is a MSCA Doctoral Network. The NUTRIOME network involves academic partners at nine European academic institutions and six associated partners across Norway, Poland, The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Ireland, and United Kingdom. The purpose of the NUTRIOME network is to train 10 DCs in data-driven precision nutrition through human intervention studies, omics-technologies and advanced data analyses in order to evaluate personal responses to foods and diets.

Start date will be no later than April 1, 2024.

The project and network
Metabolomics is a broad interdeplicinary field that combines analytical chemistry, biochemistry and bioinformatics to understand perturbations of and interactions within a biological system. To master this field a broad interest and training is therefore required. Therefore, depending on background and interest of the candidate, the candidate will be trained in all aspects of a metabolomics study. Specifically this will include:

  1. Integrating data from already conducted dietary intervention studies related to large-scale nutrition, microbiome and metabolomics to understand personal responses to meals/diets.
  2. Performing untargeted liquid chromatopgrahy mass spectrometry-based metabolomics on plasma samples collected in a novel precision nutrition meal intervention study (conducted within the NUTRIOME consortium) with the aim of understanding the effects of fish, meat and plant-based meals on the plasma metabolome.

The position is available in the Nutrition, Microbiome & Metabolomics Group at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. We are located in the heart of Copenhagen. During the project the PhD student will perform three secondments, each of two months duration. Two academic secondments will take place in the lab of Prof. Rikard Landberg (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden), where the candidate will help conducting the NUTRIOME meal study, and in the lab of Prof. Eran Elinav (Deutsches Krebs-forschungszentrum, Germany), where the candidate will be trained in computational omics-data analyses, respectively. Furthermore, the PhD student will do one non-academic secondment at MS Omics (Denmark) to perform metabolomics analyses.

Our group and research environment
The Nutrition, Microbiome & Metabolomics research group studies the impact of diets and foods on digestion, gut microbiome and metabolism, develops biomarkers, and accelerates precision nutrition strategies, thereby advancing nutrition for improvement of health and wellbeing. The group conducts human cohort and intervention studies, applies cutting-edge metabolomics and microbiomics, and collaborates with leading clinical, microbiome and metabolomics researchers and experts in microbiology, immunology and intestinal host receptors to validate findings and deduce underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms.

The Research group is headed by Associate Professor Henrik Munch Roager and strives for scientific excellence through multidisciplinary and collaborative work, which is supported by an inclusive and international environment. Our research facilities include human intervention facilities, modern laboratories and metabolomics facilities. See more:
