The UNEP DTU Partnership (UDP) is a UN Environment Programme (UNEP) collaborating centre and a leading international research and advisory centre on energy, climate, and sustainable development. UDP is a partnership between UNEP, DTU and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and currently has an international team of more than 70 professionals.

The Partnership is anchored at the Department of Technology, Management and Economics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and constitutes a large part of DTU’s engagement in international research based advisory services.

DTU is seeking an outstanding individual, who can lead the UNEP DTU Partnership and continue the strategic development of the Partnership, including the focused development of the portfolio of activities, strengthening the value formation based on DTU’s research and innovation and ensure intensified communication about UDP’s project results. The director of the UNEP DTU Partnership reports to the Head of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics and is part of the department’s management team.

Main functions include:


  • Responsibility for the overall development and results of the UDP in close collaboration with the head of department, the deputy director and the remaining management team
  • Agenda-setting leadership on new and emerging issues on climate change and sustainable development
  • Responsibility for strengthening the engagement between the core partners (DTU, UNEP and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
  • Further developing a strong research base by expanding links between the Partnership and other leading international research institutions
  • Leading strategic fundraising efforts, especially with major international donors and foundations
  • Profiling of UDP in relevant international and Danish fora and presenting its work at meetings and conferences
  • Engagement in selected project activities, especially on emerging or politically sensitive issues
  • Expand the private sector engagement in UDP’s portfolio of activities
  • Responsibility for performance appraisals of UDP’s management

Qualifications


  • Strong leadership skills with solid experience within change management, preferably in an international and academic context
  • Understanding of DTU’s research areas, research based advice and leading scientific environments with an academic value set
  • Ability to engage with the scientific and policy community on climate change and sustainable development
  • Experience in leading fundraising efforts, preferably with major international donors and foundations
  • Experienced networker with the ability to interact with top management of foundations, organizations, companies, universities and authorities
  • Motivating management style and interest in managing multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams
  • Proven results-oriented and hard-working, realizing the significant time pressure and demands associated with the position.
  • The working language at the UNEP DTU Partnership is English, requiring the successful candidate to be proficient in English and have excellent writing skills. Good knowledge of or willingness to learn the Danish language and culture is required to ensure the engagement with the Danish government, private sector and other stakeholders. Knowledge of other UN languages will be considered an asset, but is not a requirement.

As Director for the UNEP DTU Partnership, you will be developing a succesful unit with significant impact on the global climate change agenda. The Partnership implements a large part of UNEP's climate change activities worldwide and is highly involved in the support to the UN Climate Convention's work especially on technology, new market mechanisms and transparency.

Salary and terms of employment


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The position is announced for an employment for 5 years, with the possibility of prolongation of 3 years in a “term of years” contract according to existing rules. Individual supplements matching the position will be negotiated.

Expected start date is 1 March 2021. Place of employment will be DTU Lyngby Campus and at the DTU offices located in the UN City Copenhagen.
