Kongens Lyngby

A three-year PhD scholarship concerned with dedicated investigations of (bio)molecular recognition mechanisms by combining experimental broadband laser and interferometric THz spectroscopy and novel quantum chemical modelling of weakly bound cluster molecules is available at DTU Chemistry under the supervision of Associate Professor René Wugt Larsen. The PhD scholarship is available from January 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The aim of the PhD project is to combine novel laser and interferometric THz cluster spectroscopic investigations with advanced quantum chemical modeling approaches in the exploration of the driving forces associated with fundamental (bio)molecular recognition mechanisms for organic molecules with functional groups representative for biological systems. The non-covalent intermolecular forces stabilizing weakly bound cluster molecules are much weaker than covalent bonds and the class of transitions associated with large-amplitude intermolecular vibrational motion introduced by molecular complexation is observed in the technologically challenging THz spectral region. THz spectral signatures of weakly bound cluster molecules will enable the characterization of intermolecular potential energy landscapes involved in the molecular recognition mechanisms with unprecedented accuracy and yield rigorous benchmarks for quantum chemical methodologies and molecular docking tools.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As a PhD candidate in our laboratory, you will be involved in the further technological development of our low-temperature THz cluster spectroscopy facilities based on THz laser technology and Fourier Transform spectroscopy and advanced quantum chemical modeling of intermolecular force fields and potential energy balances for fundamental (bio)molecular recognition processes in a thriving academic environment at DTU Chemistry in the Copenhagen metropolitan area.

  • The candidate must have a solid experience within physical chemistry, quantum chemistry and molecular spectroscopy and ideally extensive practical hands-on laboratory experience with spectroscopic experimental work.
  • To apply for the PhD scholarship, the candidate must have obtained a two-year M. Sc. degree or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year M. Sc. Degree (120 ECTS points).
  • The PhD program at DTU consists of course work corresponding to 30 ECTS points, teaching and dissemination activities corresponding to approximately three months in total and external research stays. This advertised PhD position involves stays at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.
  • The PhD candidate should be able to work independently in an international environment and be confident in both written and spoken English. In addition, the applicant should be ambitious and strive towards scientific excellence.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
