Nykøbing Mors

Are you interested in biogenic reef restoration and want to contribute to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims? Investigating in new hatchery protocols to produce key protected species such as the Northern horse mussel and follow the deployment in restored reefs? Here is an opportunity for you.

At DTU’s National Institute of Aquatic Resources, we offer a 3-year PhD student position with focus on hatchery production of the Northern horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus (Linnaus, 1758), for reef restoration. You will be employed in the Section for Coastal Ecology to develop the hatchery production of horse mussel spat under the framework of the BioReef project (BioReef ). During your scholarship, you will gain scientific expertise in marine biology, bivalve physiology and cultivation, water quality monitoring, ecosystem services, and providing management recommendations for horse mussel reef restoration. You will be positioned in at the DTU Aqua site in Nykøbing Mors (Northern Jutland) with shorter stays at the section’s facility in Kgs. Lyngby when required.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in restoring biogenic reefs around the world to contribute to halt the degradation of ecosystems. Only a few attempts have been initiated to restore horse mussel reefs. This PhD project will contribute to the development and provide novel hatchery protocols for large-scale production of horse mussel spat that can be deployed for reef restoration purposes. The Northern horse mussel is one of the larger and long-lived (45 years) reef-forming bivalve species in European waters. Horse mussel beds are classified as threatened and declining habitats by the sea conventions OSPAR and HELCOM. In the project, you will build on existing knowledge developed at DTU Aqua in a team dedicated to bivalve production for reef restoration and aquaculture. You will acquire new scientific expertise to produce horse mussel spat on a large scale for reef restoration. You will study the growing conditions requirements in a hatchery setting for successful larvae production, and test for suitable substrates for horse mussel settlement in the hatchery. The hatchery produced horse mussel spat will be deployed in the field and the initial survival and growth performance of the horse mussel reef will be studied.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for conducting experimental research on horse mussel (Modiolus modiolus ) in a hatchery setting from brood stock to spat, to secure horse mussel spat production for reef restoration. You will focus on developing methods for producing spats on different cultch and evaluate the performance of the mussels on cultch in the restored habitat(s).

Your responsibility and tasks will be to:

  • Plan and complete laboratory experiments and hatchery work following the reproduction cycle of horse mussel with respect to biosecurity measures.
  • Contribute to the daily routine and work tasks of the section, incl. feed and maintain horse mussel and other bivalve cultures, water quality data collection in the hatchery and in the field.
  • Complete the required PhD school courses and external stays to develop and expand your scientific expertise.
  • Disseminate scientific results in peer-reviewed articles and assist in scientific advice to Danish ministries and agencies.
  • Attend conferences to present your research and expand your academic network.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Your desired traits and skills:

  • Curiosity and high motivation for marine research.
  • Accuracy and patience for laboratory and hatchery work.
  • Strong knowledge of basic marine biology.
  • Experience in laboratory work, hatchery production and field work.
  • Analytical skills and experience in statistical analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and be flexible.
  • Capacity to travel between your main working place at the DTU Aqua facility in Nykøbing Mors and the Institute headquarter at Lyngby for shorter stays.
