Odense M
The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a mechanical engineering research assistant position. The position is available from 1st March 2020, based in Odense, and is a permanent technical support position.
The position is based in the SDU Biorobotics unit and will support the unit's existing research and teaching activities in bio-inspired robotics, bio-robotics, medical robotics and embedded systems. The unit has a lively programme of research in bio-robotics, with lizards, frogs, dung beetles and bats as the key animal models; we also work on legged robots based on bio-inspired principles inspired by insects and construction of bespoke robotic devices, such as camera pill robots and other embedded electronic devices for ourselves and other units at SDU. The unit's participation in the robotics and UAS educations, as well as its involvement in supporting the Learning and Experience Technology programme, frequently results in the need for new technology for teaching and research. The unit has excellent technical support and a history of building unusual and interesting experimental robots. It has a strong collaboration with other SDU units such as Robotics, Electronics and the UAS Centre.
Creating unusual and interesting experimental robots requires a variety of technical expertise in electronics, mechanical engineering, embedded programming and mechatronics. We seek a technically-oriented staff member to support the unit in the mechanical engineering components of these areas.
Responsibilities and tasks
We seek a talented and enthusiastic engineer to assist us in the design and construction of our novel robot systems. We envisage a mechanical structure designer and builder, whose focus will be on the design and construction of robot bodies, including preparation of mechanical designs and drawings, liaising with the mechanical workshop, fabrication of prototypes, commissioning of external fabrication tasks, assisting with managing 3D printing activities in the unit. The successful candidate will also provide support to the new Soft Robotics Centre, working with a variety of 3D fast-prototyping and manufacturing technologies.
Preferred applicants have:
- An M. Sc. degree in a relevant engineering discipline: robotics,
mechanical engineering or mechatronics, or equivalent
- Experience with construction and programming of robotic prototypes
- Experience of assisting research staff with the specification and design
of experimental structures
- Interest in supporting bachelor and master level student projects, as
well as the research staff
- Experience of interacting with external fabricators - specification and
management of external tasks
For more information about these positions, please contact Professor John Hallam, [email protected], Phone: 65503546 or Professor Anders Lyhne Christensen, [email protected], Phone: 65507324.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format.
Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb.
