Wood Durability Expert, Emerging Technologies
Imagine a position in a company who have the ambition, the commitment and the resources to search for the most interesting upcoming technologies within building materials and develop and mature these in their own large test environments in close cooperation with leading universities and external suppliers. This is VELUX Emerging Technologies.
Right now, we are looking for a new lead expert in wood durability with extensive experience and knowledge, who wants to take the responsibility for the development of new sustainable and environmentally safe ways to ensure that VELUX products will keep their long-life expectancy. Is this you?
Your challenges
This position gives you a great opportunity of becoming part of leading VELUX into the future with sustainable wood, while working in an approximately 20 people team focusing on identifying and maturing emerging technologies. You will become the wood durability specialist, having technical tasks as part of a highly specialized research based development team, focused on developing environmentally friendly wood as outdoor building material for the next generations of products. The position includes technical evaluation of environmentally friendly means for making durable wood, treatment of wood, processing, surfaces, and more.
In this role, you will be a key collaborator in the use of durable wood for future products, and it involves working with external stakeholders, as well as in internal company projects as a capacity to lead the technical discussion toward meeting program goals. Most work will be in a small team atmosphere, with individual focus areas. You will be working in a very skilled department (Emerging Technologies), and you will be working with some of the brightest and most experienced professionals within their fields of knowledge, with different backgrounds and skills such as chemical, mechanical, physics, modelling, process, production and more. You are expected to be technical leadspecialist ithin this important area of expertise.
Your qualifications
You are an expert within wood, ideally with experience in environmentally friendly wood treatments in order to avoid fungi and mold. Treatments which includes; impregnation, cell modification, overcoats, modification/enhancement of the wood substrate, humidity control in wood etc. Your experience is within different means of wood impregnation and wood modification, including understanding of fungus control and a basic understanding of fungus biology and immobilization. You are up to date with the newest research, and you probably already have been involved in a mix of projects both in the academic world as well as part of industry R&D departments. Furthermore, you have a strong drive to achieve great results through cross-organisational collaboration, and you dare to challenge the status quo through argumentation, testing and listening. You have strong communication skills and enjoy working in the field between theory and actual implementation of technologies.
Preferable, you have a chemical or material science education as scientist and/or engineer within chemistry, minimum master grade or higher. You have worked in a research and development environment; corporate research experience is a plus, and you have a profound global network within relevant industry such as university, institutes, chemical industry, wood industry, manufacturing, waste management, etc.
You also bring:
- Knowledge about evaluating durability of wood; preferably including accelerated testing
- Knowhow on surface treatment to create desirable wood appearances
- Preferably, worked with wood as a construction material for windows or ambient exposures
- Knowing about environmental exposures and basic construction principles
