Danish Refugee Council, one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a dedicated Project Officer (maternity cover for 1 year) to join our team in the Civil Society Unit in Copenhagen. If you are interested in matters relating to migration, forced displacement and humanitarian work, notably in the Afghan context, and if you are a skilled project officer capable of mobilizing, motivating and building consensus among people, you may be the person we are looking for.

About the job

The project will support members of the Afghan diaspora in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands to deliver protection information based on the needs among potential and current migrants from Afghanistan. The information is defined through research and data collection combined with in depth consultations with Afghan diaspora groups in Europe and returnees in Afghanistan.

By channeling accurate and relevant information through the Afghan diaspora in Europe, the project aims to provide Afghans on the move and those considering migrating a better understanding of:

(i) protection risks en route,

(ii) their rights throughout the journey and upon arrival in country of destination, and

(iii) how to access accurate information on asylum procedures, and protection and support services available from local and international actors in countries of transit and destination.

You will be part of the DRC team in Copenhagen and work closely with MMC in Afghanistan. Your focus will be to support Afghan diaspora communities in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands to engage with migrants and refugees in a way that will reduce their exposure to protection risk.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Support and work with trusted Afghan diaspora partners in Denmark, Netherlands, Germany to develop a communications / engagement strategy based on the findings of the formative research completed in the first phase of the project
  • Support trainers to conduct sessions on Protection information and Communication.
  • Assist in donor reporting, desk research, translation and other ad hoc tasks related to the project
  • Provide input to quality monitoring, evaluation and learning as well as documentation of impact
  • Administrative tasks (related to finance, procurement, subgrant agreements, etc.)

About you

To be successful in this role, you excel in mobilizing and working with a broad range of actors. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • 2-3 years’ experience in project management and civil society engagement
  • University degree or higher education - preferably in social sciences, project management, humanitarian studies

  • Fluency in English and proficient in Dari and/or Pashtu

  • Solid experience in participatory approaches and facilitation skills (events/meetings/trainings)
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills
  • Strong organization and multitasking skills
  • Cultural and gender sensitivity
  • Strong interest with matters relating to migration, diaspora, forced displacement and humanitarian work

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Afghan context and culture would be an asset
  • Theoretical or practical knowledge of community-based protection and/or Social Behaviour Change Communication would be an asset

Full-time position with prospects

Contract length: 12 months

Occassional travel to Germany and the Netherlands.
