Power Solutions Aerodynamic & Mechanical Assembly, Finish & Add-ons

The Assembly, Finish and Add-on team is a part of the Blade module and responsible for robust design and manufacturing process design, development, and ongoing support for blades production for wind turbines. The team consists of motivated employees located in Lem Denmark, Isle of Wight UK, Chennai in India and in Porto in Portugal.
Our role is to Design the Blade Components in a way that ensures easy, repeatable, and robust manufacturing, whilst delivering cost innovative structural performance. We are accountable for delivering and maintaining the Design of the Blades. This includes detailed drawings, assembly drawings, specifications, and the Design Bill of Materials. Our job is to provide clear, unambiguous communication of the Design Intent to our Manufacturing colleagues, empowering them to optimize their Manufacturing Process and Tooling within our clear Design Constraints.
The new Process Development Engineering positions will primarily cover Blade manufacturing process design and development - for new products and processes.

Responsibilities
Working very closely with the Structures, Catia and CAD teams, you will be designing and re-designing many of the Blade features and details to ensure Ease of Manufacture. This requires practical experience of the consequences of the design and a deep understanding of what works in the Manufacturing Environment.

  • Collect Voice of Customer from Production and other stakeholders, develop, down-select and de-risk concepts, work with Catia and CAD team to create and modify models and drawings, produce specifications, write technical reports, run FMEA's and oversee production trials.
  • Direct design changes through our Change Management system with accountability for the drawings, specifications, and Design BoM. Your achievement will be measured by how little change is subsequently required, how well the design performs in production against our specifications and how effectively the change is communicated and specified.
  • Define and develop blade manufacturing concepts based on design specifications given from our blade design team. Prepares, evaluates, and implements methods, processes, and techniques that support process design to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability for the Vestas blades whilst keeping focus on health and safety.
  • Verify and test new blade manufacturing concepts in laboratory environments and subscale production environment.
  • Develop and maintain P-FMEA's and control plans for new products and processes.
  • Creating, communicating, and maintaining work instructions for prototyping as baseline for official work papers used later in serial production.
  • Define and specify laser line positioning for blade manufacturing, ensure CAD drawing/CATIA models will be update
  • Develop and maintain consumables / non-structural Technical Purchase Specifications (TPS) for blade production materials
  • Work closely together in cross functional teams with tooling development & support, and the training team to ensure alignment. Further collaboration with other engineers and technicians across the organisation to ensure stable production processes

Qualifications

  • You will hold a bachelor or master's degree in engineering or equivalent, coupled with practical knowledge of composite manufacturing e.g. infusion technology, Pre-preg, component assembly, coating and spray painting
  • You have experience within blade design, design for manufacturing, and for example have knowledge of CATIA composite V5 from a development perspective
  • You will have practical experience of composite manufacturing, good understanding of machining and knowledge in areas such as carbon fibre, glass fibre etc
  • Experience with thermoset resin systems such as Epoxy and Polyurethane chemistry
  • NDT methods such as Thermography, Ultrasonic Testing or Laser Shearography
  • Experience with running optimization and process development projects in manufacturing environments
  • Experience with Experimental design / Multivariable data analysis both planning and treatment of statistical data and tolerance analysis
