København Ø

The Information Retrieval lab (IRLab) of the Department of Computer Science (DIKU) at the University of Copenhagen is looking for a Part-time programmer to work 20 hours per week for a 6-month period, starting from 1 Juley or as soon as possible (the starting date and the amount of work hours per week can be negotiated).

Tasks
The student programmer will work on the project “Algorithms, Data and Democracy” (ADD), which has been recently funded by the Velux and Villum foundations (https://di.ku.dk/english/news/2021/add-project/). Specifically, the student programmer will work both on the data side, and on the system side. On the data side, the student programmer will gather, store, normalize, and prepare data for benchmark development. On the system side, the storage and processing of the above data require setting up a small working cluster of GPUs, which in itself requires approval and close interaction with the university IT department (KU IT support).

Your tasks will include:

  • Implement a Web crawler to download, parse and store web pages;
  • Implement a program to automatically extract information from Web pages: for example, extract political claims from fact-checking websites, extract textual content from Web pages, etc;
  • Implement a program to extract keywords from text: for example, by removing stopwords, using language models, etc;
  • Implement a program to submit queries to major search engines and retrieve the ranked list of URLs;
  • Instantiate and run crowdsourcing experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk;
  • Normalise and organize data in some appropriate format, for example SQL database;
  • Setting up a working cluster of GPUs in collaboration with the university IT department.

We expect

  • Experience with programming in Python, SQL, and/or other languages;
  • Experience with developing Web applications: HTTP, Rest API, ssh, vpn, and/or related knowledge;
  • Experience with developing data science applications: Web crawling, text classification, and/or related knowledge;
  • Familiarity with Pytorch and/or TensorFlow;
  • Propensity to effectively communicate and positively interact with a diverse team of people, ranging from academics to IT support personnel.
