The Centre for Digital Society of FBK (DigiS - https://digis.fbk.eu/) embraces the vision that digital technology has the potential to be a key transformational technology to create a more sustainable, inclusive and secure society. Its mission is to perform advanced research and develop innovative digital technology to address key challenges of the future digital society. The center is composed of a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 researchers, technologists and managers (including PhD students) organized in 13 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the ICT domain and 2 support units focusing on project management and technology maturation.

The Smart Networks and Services (SENSE) research unit of FBK-ICT focuses its research on the design, analysis, and development of smart software-centric and programmable network solutions with a clear emphasis on edge computing, 5G/6G networks, and human-driven networking. SENSE Unit work combines research and development in telecommunications engineering, computer science, data science, and machine learning (AI), with the ultimate purpose of bringing research beyond simulation and into the real world. The SENSE unit coordinates the flagship European projects 5G-Carmen (https://5gcarmen.eu/) and AI@Edge. We also serve as subject matter experts and provide technical/research advice to external partners.

Job Description

The SENSE Research Unit is seeking applicants interested in joining our team responsible for developing proof-of-concept studies, implementing new algorithms, and building prototypes for various applications and environments. Developers work in close collaboration with our researcher team to define and road-map PoCs, develop next-gen research prototypes and solutions, and carry out test activities on smart networks systems (5G, B5G).

Role

The successful applicant's role will be to implement, evolve, develop and maintain SENSE research software and prototypes. She/he will work in a dynamic mixed team of researchers and developers, participating in the software solutions' design, engaging on a diverse set of projects independently and in small teams.

Both technical expertise and problem-solving skills are required to develop software solutions that meet research international projects objectives. The successful applicant will be exposed to many technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Python, Go, SDR, Open RAN, Machine Learning tools ...) and will have the opportunity to gain experience on them. We require the capability to adapt to evolving research and developing trends and explore new concepts outside the personal comfort zone.

We are an international research centre; therefore, supporting technical conversations in English and knowing how to work with people from different cultures are essential.

Main Tasks

  • Design, development and maintenance of software tools and platforms related to the research topics of the SENSE unit;
  • contribute to the maintenance and update of SENSE testbed and lab devices;
  • technical documentation of the architecture/system/software solutions;
  • collaboration with the SENSE team of researchers and engineers on research and industrial projects;
  • provide technology consultation for our internal research team.

The Ideal Candidate should have

  • MSc Degree in Telecommunications/Network/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines;
  • development experience in C, C++ and Python programming languages;
  • familiarity with digital communications and networking fundamentals;
  • know-how in one or more of the following fields:- Software-defined radio development (GNURadio) and/or USRP or similar SDR platforms;- virtualisation and cloud resource orchestration software (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Helm);- mobile communication technologies and standards (3GPP/ETSI), including communication protocols and systems analysis;- simulation tools.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, with a strong commitment to achieving assigned objectives;
  • problem-solving attitude and curiosity are welcome;
  • good knowledge of written and spoken English.

Employment

Type of contract: fixed-term contract (full-time 38 h per week)

Duration: 18 months

Start date: April 2021

Gross annual salary: about € 26.500
