The Digital Society Center of FBK (https://digis.fbk.eu/) vision is that digital technology has a pervasive impact on our lives and is reshaping our society. The challenge is to ensure that digital technology becomes a stepping stone to create a more sustainable, inclusive and secure society.

Its mission is to perform advanced research and develop innovative digital technology to address key challenges of the future digital society. The center is composed by a multidisciplinary team of more than 100 researchers, technologists and managers (including PhD students) organized in 13 research units dedicated to specific research areas in the ICT domain and 2 support units focusing on project management and technology maturation.

The Intelligent Interfaces and Interaction (i3) Research Unit focuses on designing interaction modalities for cutting-edge IT using a highly interdisciplinary approach borrowed from social sciences.

The research objectives are at the same time technological—that is, developing innovative technologies—and social—that is, investigating how people use and benefit from these technologies.The emphasis is to investigate interactive experiences aimed at improving the quality of human interactions mediated by computers.

Job Description

The purpose of FBK’s Tenure Track program is to offer high level professionals the opportunity of pursuing a structured career path in order to become a tenured researcher contributing to the long- term strategy of the organization.

Within this framework, FBK is looking for a candidate to cover the position with a dynamic, highly motivated, researcher in the field of “Intelligent Interfaces and Interaction” for the i3 Unit of Digital Society Center. The candidate will work within the i3 Unit, reporting directly to the Head of Unit.

The candidate will be involved in research work related to the design and evaluation of innovative digital technology to address the future digital society’s key challenges, to advance state-of-the-art research and perform project activities in the following topics:

  • digital-based innovation in education
  • digital support to co-production of (public) services
  • human-computer interaction with AI-based technologies

The candidate will work in collaboration with other researchers of the i3 Unit and of the Digital Society Center, as well as with partners involved in i3 projects. The activities will also take place as part of collaborative projects for research and training initiatives in the shared laboratory with the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences of the University of Trento. The candidate is also expected to contribute to proposals for funded activities, including reporting and dissemination of results (in both academic and popular venues).

The ideal candidate should have

  • PHD in areas related to Human-Computer Interaction
  • Expertise in User-Centered design techniques
  • Research and project experience in the specific topics
  • Excellent publication track record in the field of HCI
  • Oral and written proficiency in English
  • Excellent communication skills and teamwork attitude

Additional requirements

  • Experience in supervision of internship and thesis of bachelor and master level on topics related to HCI and teaching experience at bachelor and master level on topics related to HCI
  • Experience in working for international research projects
  • Experience in writing proposals of research projects
  • Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in HCI

Employment

Type of contract: Tenure Track position leading to an FBK 3nd Level Researcher (R3) permanent contract.

Duration: The maximum duration of the Tenure Track contract is up to 5 years (which may be reduced in accordance to the Committee assessment on the candidate's abilities and skills). If the final assessment of the Tenure Track experience is positive, the selected candidate for the tenure track position will be offered a permanent R3 contract.

Working hours: full time (38 h per week).

Gross annual salary: about 39.500€, plus objectives achievement bonus.

Start date: September 2021

Workplace: Povo, Trento (Italy).
