Veterinarian for The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration’s Meat Inspection Division, Blans, Denmark

Approximately 125 million chickens, pigs and cattle are annually slaughtered in Denmark. The animals are inspected by veterinarians employed by The Danish Food Authority's Meat Inspection. The inspections are carried out by approximately 560 employees spread over 24 large and medium-sized slaughterhouses. The Meat Inspection also handles the inspection of nearly 90 slaughterhouses throughout Denmark.

As a veterinarian in The Meat Inspection Division you will, together with your colleagues, be responsible for carrying out daily checks at the slaughterhouses, i.e. inspection of the animals before and after the slaughter. The veterinarian checks that the slaughtering, transport and handling of slaughter animals takes place correctly in terms of animal welfare, and that the slaughtering processes etc. complies with applicable hygiene standards. You will also be given tasks in connection with supervision and checks as well as audits at the companies. There will be checks in connection with exports and the issuing of export certificates, as well as follow-up on various samples taken (microbiol-ogy and chemistry).

Employment terms and salary:

In order to work as a veterinarian it is a necessity that the applicant obtains a Danish veterinarian authorization.

The authorization is granted by The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration upon application.

The grant is depending on whether the applicant is an EU-citizen or from a third country and what education level the applicant has.

As a veterinarian, the average working hours will be 37 hours per week in-cluding a ½ hour paid daily lunch break.

The normal working hours are Monday to Friday. However due to the production conditions, especially at poultry slaughterhouses, working hours at these slaughterhouses will begin Sunday evenings. Weekend work will only rarely occur, and work/life balance is of high focus.

Communication with the slaughterhouse employees and your colleagues at The Meat Inspection Division is in Danish. Upon employment, you will be enrolled on a Danish course so that you quickly acquire the necessary lan-guage skills.

For the first 6 month of employment you will be employed on a scheme where you work 80 % of your weekly hours and receive payment for equivalent of 80 % of the total monthly salary. The last 20 % of your work time is spent at language school which is paid for by The Danish Food Authority's Meat Inspection.

Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement for the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration's veterinarians at export slaughterhouses, etc. and local agreements between The Danish Veterinary and Food Ad-ministration and the Danish Veterinary Association.

The basic salary as a new graduate is DKK 26,409.17 per month. You will also receive two qualification supplements for working in a slaughterhouse of DKK 2,564.63 and DKK 4,185.31 respectively per month which is a total of DKK 33,159.11 per month.

The basic salary increases continuously cf. the collective agreement and after working for 6 years, the basic salary will increase to DKK 32,180.08 plus slaughterhouse allowance cf. above, which gives a total monthly salary of DKK 40,130.11. In addition, there is an opportunity to negotiate supplements based on qualifications.

17.1% of the salary per month is paid as pension contribution and you also get 6 weeks holiday per year.

You must have a driving license for driving a car.

The Meat Inspection Division

You will be employed in The Meat Inspection Division at Danish Crown Blans, Langbro 7, 6400 Sønderborg. The company is an effectively driven pig slaughterhouse with related cutting and boning departements. Every week approximately 62.000 pigs are slaughtered distributed on 2 chains on day-time shifts and 2 chains on evening shifts. There will be full rotation between the shifts and you must be willing to work in shifts.

We have pre-planned shifts. The work takes place between 4.50 am to 23.48 pm, but with different start and end times.

In addition to the 2 Section Managers, the Department consists of 7 veteri-narians, 38 supervisory technicians and 2 secretaries. You will be a part of a large dynamic group of colleagues that vary in age (35 to 67 years of age) and basis of experience.

We have a good collaborative climate with an open and free tone of commu-nication where the employees are informed and involved as much as possible in the daily work.

The work is teambased with good opportunity for discussing professional issues with experienced colleagues.

  • You are committed, open and honest and have a flexible and appreciative attitude that among other things is expressed by good cooperation with col-leagues and the management.
  • You like working with people in different professional groups.
  • Experience in meat control will be an advantage, but if you are newly quali-fied or come from another veterinary field, we will provide thorough training.
