The University of Southern Denmark in Esbjerg invites applications for a 3-year fixed-term assistant professorship position at the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economics (SEBE), on Participatory Research Through Design, Multi-Stakeholder Innovation, Sensory and Multispecies Design Anthropology and Data Physicalisation, with a focus on food system transformation. The position is from 1.4.2022 or soon hereafter.

SEBE https://www.SDU.dk/en/sebe is part of the Faculty of Social Science and is part of Campus Esbjerg. The Department employs approx. 40 people. Research in the Department is organized in three research groups, and the announced position will be part of the Management and Economics of Resources and the Environment group (MERE), with teaching responsibilities in Esbjerg, and research in both Kolding and Esbjerg.

The research of the group in Esbjerg covers environmental and natural resource economics (see the profile of the group at this website. The focus of the MERE group puts specific emphasis on economic uses of the interlinked biosphere and biophysical systems as well as risk analysis and management. Topics of research within these emphases currently focus on

  • ecosystem conservation and use;
  • marine resource use and conservation;
  • energy transitions;
  • climate regulation;
  • food system transformation; and
  • intersections of technology, trade and development relating to these issues.

While the research group mainly consists of economists, the research is often placed in multidisciplinary academic and international environments. Research and teaching activities should strengthen societal engagement in solutions to problems of sustainable development.

The position:

The position will involve 30% teaching responsibilities and 70% research. Over time, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree as funding conditions evolve.

The Department provides teaching for degrees in Environmental and Resource Management (M.Sc.), General Business Administration and Economics (B.Sc.), Marketing and Innovation (M.Sc.), Sports and Event Management (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), Sociology and Cultural Analysis (B.Sc and M.Sc.), and Diploma and MBA programmes in Business Administration and Economics. The Department provides modern facilities for research and teaching, as well as resources for research and teaching, resources for research assistants and for travel and conference participation.

The research will be conducted on the European Horizon 2020 research and innovation project, FUSILLI: Fostering Urban Food system transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation (https://fusilli-project.eu and https://koldingfood2030.dk), which is led by Associate Professor, Danielle Wilde and has as its aim to understand what is required for an EU city’s food system to become sustainable. The successful candidate must be confident to engage with stakeholders from across the food system value chain and policy, to work with diverse cities across Europe, and manage Tasks and Deliverables required by the EU project. In particular, the position will require close collaboration with Kolding Municipality and public engagement through design research actions at SDU’s Food Lab at Riberdyb 10 in Kolding.

Applicants are expected to have knowledge within at least one of the following fields: participatory research through design, food studies, regenerative agriculture and/or environmental humanities and societal transition. We especially welcome applications from candidates who have experience in experimental food design and/or interventionist research methodologies such as action research or design-based research.

Job Qualifications:

Candidates should hold a PhD in design research, food studies or closely related field.
We seek applicants with a strong research potential and the ability to work in a collaborative environment with a focus on food system transition. The preferred applicants’ research activity is expected to complement the group’s research profile and to be published in the most relevant high-quality international journals. For this post, we welcome applicants with empirical research interest in blue, as well as green economy.

The group participates actively in the research and teaching involved in the University’s Center for Maritime Health and Safety, Energy Management Center, and Center for Rural Research, as well as the Danish Centre for Risk and Safety Management, which is jointly operated with Aalborg University.

The successful applicant is expected to play an active role in the MERE research group and to be able to work collaboratively with colleagues in this and other research groups and centres at the Department. As the research group is engaged in many externally funded projects, the successful applicant will enjoy the benefits of working in an inspiring and open research environment.

If the candidate would like to stay in Denmark, it would be a benefit if the candidate master the language at a level which enables them to read Danish exam papers and administrative documents. For this purpose, free language courses will be offered.

Appointment to the position requires a PhD or equivalent and will be in accordance with the salary agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

Assessment of applications will be done under existing Appointment Order for universities.
Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

When the assessment committee has submitted its report, the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process.
