No, we don’t have any ships in Novo Nordisk. But we do have miles and miles of pipes, thousands of valves, literally hundreds of tanks and many, many other pieces of equipment that need to work together perfectly – and we know that you will be well equipped to help us take care of these, if you are a seasoned marine engineer. And maybe you are ready for a life-changing career?

About the department

Insulin Manufacturing 1 (IM1) is the worlds’ largest facility producing insulin. Here we have almost everything in the value chain under one roof – from proliferating our patented cell cultures to extracting and purifying the final Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), that is used in many of Novo Nordisk’s quality products. We are proud that we are instrumental in changing the lives of millions of people living with chronical diseases. The reason we can produce about 25% of worlds’ insulin supply in our facility alone, is because we are good at what we do – and we are proud of that as well. We are quite strictly regulated, and because we handle that well – allowing innovation and creativity go hand in hand with scrutinous controls and meticulous documentation – we have earned the success we enjoy.

In the Fermentation & Recovery dept., where you will be part of the production support team, you will have 15 immediate colleagues. Some of them are production engineers or biochemical engineers, others have backgrounds similar to yours. It is our responsibility to ensure a stable operation of all the steel tanks, pipework, valves, pumps and centrifuges that allow for predictable processes in the many production steps. We maintain our very complex systems with long lists, great tools and a well-placed dash of well-earned experience. We initiate and drive optimisation projects, while trying to simplify processes and equipment whenever possible. If anything is out of the ordinary, we drive the methodical process that allows us to facilitate corrective and preventive measures – and even if we know our equipment well, we can always learn new approaches, implement new technology or knowledge – and we love to share our findings. With us, you will never be alone with the extraordinary challenges, and you will build valuable experience quickly in a truly global organisation, where you will find dedicated and competent colleagues – who likes to have fun and be safe at work.

The position

As our new engineer, you will help the team operate, maintain and optimise our equipment, ensuring smooth quality processes throughout the value chain. Your expertise and knowledge will be needed daily, whenever ideas, issues or changes are discussed or actually implemented. Like all of us, you will be documenting your work, creating safety, quality and learning opportunities – and probably learn a thing or two about working in a regulated industry, even if you are already familiar with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) rules, that we abide to. When you are ready, you will be driving the systematic problem solving processes that we utilize to resolve issues, find root causes and develop knowledge from that benefits us in the future. As we share what we learn with a very large organisation, you will quickly find that your work can inspire colleagues in China or the United States – and the other way around.

We distribute tasks through our board meetings, making sure that we all know about workload, operational concerns and ongoing projects, so that we can best help each other. We also find that LEAN tools can be very effective in making things move more smoothly and eliminate redundancy – so be ready to gear up on your LEAN toolkit.

Qualifications

You may of course be a marine engineer, but you could also have learned how to handle a complex setup like ours in other ways. Maybe you are a mechanical engineer, or maybe you have gathered experience for years in the food or dairy industry. The bottom line is that you can operate, service and troubleshoot a large scale production setup as strictly environmentally controlled and meticulously documented like ours. For us to trust you with such a big responsibility, we expect that you have at least 3-5 years of experience, that you are really good at your work, and that you are ready for an exciting learning curve.

Because you will be interacting with so many different stakeholders throughout a day, you need to be good with people, listening to their concerns and explain difficult things from a perspective that may be different than your own. We also expect you to be proactive, know how to energise your surroundings and always work to find solutions, especially when things seem hard. Lastly - you never, ever, compromise on quality or safety.

For this position, technical proficiency is needed in both English and Danish.
