We are looking for a Senior Director and Head of Drug Design who will take up the overall responsibility of building the R&D pipeline by inventing and producing innovative first in class or best in class drug candidates.
You will report directly to VP Head of Research & Early Development and will be a part of the leadership team of Research & Early Development. As part of the leadership team, you will act as a role model in building our capabilities even further, while at the same time ensuring efficiency and effectiveness - and challenging the status quo.
As a Senior Director you will head up a function of currently 30 employees based in Denmark and about 40 contractors (PhD and MSc level) based in India. In close collaboration with your department leaders, you will be responsible for continuously developing and building the R&D pipeline and partner with various internal and external teams to deliver on our ambitious goals.
In your leadership role, you will be accountable for the following areas:
To be successful in this role, we envision that you hold a PhD in the areas of medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmacy or related subjects such as analytical or physical science. You have at least 10 years industrial experience in medicinal chemistry and drug design and have a track record of bringing small molecule candidates to clinical testing. The preferred candidate has an extensive experience from small molecule projects covering Protein-Protein Interaction modulators, Targeted protein degraders or RNA targets.
You have a minimum of 8 years of experience leading high-performance teams and a strong track record of developing talents. You have an international mindset and outlook, and you are known for your open and positive mindset. You find it motivating to work with people development and helping others to perform and deliver on ambitious goals. You have an excellent ability to identify, prioritize and focus on key challenges and a strong drive for results. Additionally, you understand the importance of creating data driven, agile and innovative work processes, securing an inflow of internal and external innovation into the portfolio, in addition to progressing the portfolio with the highest speed and quality according to LEO Pharma’s overall ambitions.
You have solid stakeholder management and communication skills and you are able to communicate effectively with colleagues from a variety of scientific and business disciplines. Additionally, you can manage ambiguity effectively and have a good understanding of team dynamics and how to promote and support a constructive collaboration.

Leading a Drug Design Function with highly skilled scientists and technicians
As a Senior Director you will head up a function of currently 30 employees based in Denmark and about 40 contractors (PhD and MSc level) based in India. In close collaboration with your department leaders, you will be responsible for continuously developing and building the R&D pipeline and partner with various internal and external teams to deliver on our ambitious goals.
In your leadership role, you will be accountable for the following areas:
- Set strategic direction, build and enhance capabilities to ensure implementation of our Drug Technology Platform strategy with focus on small molecules for oral delivery.
- Lead the Drug Design function through transformation and change by leading by example and setting the framework for a transparent, efficient and agile working environment.
- Lead the Drug Design function to support target evaluation and identify hit matter for Protein-Protein Interaction modulators, Targeted protein degraders and RNA targeting small molecules. Furthermore, lead the Drug Design function to conduct world-class medicinal chemistry and advanced synthesis to identify IPR projected development candidates.
- Drive R&D project decisions through the committee memberships below from early stage to candidate selection stage gate projects concerning drug design and discovery chemistry.
- Oversee and set direction for external/sourced FTEs in close collaboration with the leaders of the Medicinal Chemistry teams.
- Be a thought leader by building and maintaining strong external network with key opinion leaders in the field to capture external trends.
