Job Description

Introduction

Are you a motivated Electromechanical Technical Engineer, with experience in maintaining, assembling and developing complex mechanical equipment? Do you relish a challenge? Join the ALICE team in CERN’s Experimental Physics Department and contribute to the development and construction of the next generation High Energy Physics Detectors for the ALICE experiment.

You will join the Experimental Physics (EP) Department which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the European physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists. Within the EP Department you will be part of the Technical Coordination Office of the CERN ALICE Management & Engineering Support Team. This office is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of mechanical infrastructure and detectors for the ALICE experiment.

Functions

As Electromechanical Technical Engineer, you will work on the ALICE upgrade programs, that will take place during the LHC Long Shutdown periods 2026-2028 (LS3) and 2033-2034 (LS4). As member of the Technical Coordination core team, you will collaborate with engineers, technicians, and designers, under the supervision of the ALICE Project Engineer. Specific tasks are the preparation and execution of the detector installation during the LS3 and the design of the completely new ALICE3 Experiment that will replace the existing one in LS4.

You will:

  • Support the future upgrades of ALICE during the upcoming Long Shutdowns, LS3 and LS4. This involves manufacturing, assembling, and testing infrastructure components, such as a large non-magnetic stainless-steel platform capable of supporting a new 15-ton detector at a height of 6 meters from the cavern floor. Another example is the construction of the experiment's structural skeleton, measuring 7 meters in length and 3 meters in diameter. This skeleton utilizes lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon fiber, and it is meticulously designed to accommodate various detector modules and subsystems.
  • Contribute to the preparation for the dismantling of the ALICE detector during LS4. This will involve the preparation and testing of de-installation equipment and infrastructure, including lifting jigs, platforms, rotation stands, and tools. It will also include the development of infrastructure for service disconnection and dismantling, encompassing data, power, and cooling line disconnections, as well as hydraulic systems capable of moving large (27m in height) and heavy (400 tons) iron structures.
  • Work on precise and ultralight mechanics for the R&D and construction of future ALICE detectors, with a specific focus on the mechanical support structures for vertex and tracking detectors. These structures are constructed using carbon fiber composites to leverage their exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio, ensuring structural stability while minimizing mass. This activity additionally involves the construction of highly precise jigs and tools to align and assemble detector sensors with micrometric accuracy. Furthermore, the development of the detector cooling system will incorporate mini/micro liquid cooling networks and/or gas cooling flow.
  • Provide mechanical engineering support at the experiment site during the installation and maintenance periods.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electromechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience in construction and assembly of mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in operating and programming of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines.
  • Proficiency in utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Familiarity with Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • Experience in cabling and connectivity of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.

Technical competencies:

  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts
  • Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment
  • Construction, test and installation of electromechnical equipment and systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Communicating effectively: ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.

Language skills:

  • English: ability to understand and speak the language in professional contexts, draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and make oral presentations.
  • French: basic knowledge would be an asset or willingness to acquire it rapidly.
