If you have a solid track record within technology research, including machine learning and perhaps with application to video and/or IoT, you may very well be just the person we are looking for. That is, if you are motivated by heading a brilliant team of Research Engineers, and working together with our Fundamental Research and Intellectual Property teams to break and secure new land on the very forefront of what is possible – with the backing of Milestone’s owner Canon, a top 5 company globally when it comes to patents.

Scope and manage applied research projects with multiple stakeholders and contributors


You will head a core team of 4-5 Research Engineers, plus a number of assistants. Your overall focus is to scope and manage applied research projects. It could be finding right applications for computer vision models, ontology-based data fusion and analytics, or future XReality user interfaces. Applied Research projects typically last for 6-12 months and collaborate with various Milestone functions as well as external partners. You will test out applications and, where successful, lead the technology transfer process into the business. On unsuccessful tests, we’ll ‘fail fast’ and move on to the next idea/project. Your primary tasks will be to:

  • Scope and manage applied research projects;
  • Collaborate closely with the Fundamental Research and Intellectual Property functions;
  • Co-innovate with partners like Nvidia, AWS and Intel, as well as major players in the video and security industry;
  • Evangelize technology internally as well as in relevant external forums like Milestone’s conferences, AWS re:Invent and NVIDIA GTC;
  • Lead, motivate and develop your team of Research Engineers;
  • Form cross-functional teams with other areas within Milestone;
  • Travel approx. 30 days per year to meet peers and partners, globally (in non Covid times).

Ph.D., or significant experience in a research-led industry environment

Your curious mind, we take for granted; you will need the right experimental mindset, both to test the right assumptions, and to know when to draw a line.

Your CV will comprise:

  • A Ph.D., or significant experience in a research-led industry environment;
  • Experience working on collaborative projects with multiple international participants;
  • A publications and/or patent track record;
  • Experience with machine learning and/or video technology;
  • Management experience, with at least some direct reports, though this may also be from managing research projects.
