Novo Nordisk is a partner in LITMUS, a collaborative pan European research project aimed at identifying and validating biomarkers for Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and NAFLD with Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The project has received new funding and has been extended. In this context, we are looking for a talented Bioinformatics Scientist for a two-year PostDoc position.
The position:
Your main responsibility will be participation in the LITMUS project, which is an EU-funded, collaborative research project aimed at identifying and defining accurate and tractable biomarkers relevant to NAFLD as well as qualifying preclinical models of NAFLD/NASH and back-translate biomarkers for validation in these models. The goal is to establish a defined set of biomarkers that enable detection and monitoring of disease progression and regression from NAFLD through NASH to fibrosis and cirrhosis.
You will be involved in compiling existing datasets from various pre-clinical models into an integrated database. You will analyse data to establish links to phenotypic characteristics of the models. Based on standardised phenotyping and comparative biology analysis of in vivo NAFLD models, it will be determined which model(s) are the most phenotypically relevant to humans. Models for reverse-translation of human biomarkers into in vivo models will be generated to assess pre-clinical testing utility. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with pharmaceutical industry and university partners of the project. Hence some travelling must be expected.
You will also be comfortable with working in a dynamic, fast changing environment, and able to communicate complex bioinformatics solutions to scientists from diverse backgrounds. You will be expected to work with both other bioinformaticians and other data scientists as well as molecular biologists and chemists.
You will be employed in the Bioinformatics area in Digital Science and. The position will be based in Denmark or United Kingdom.

The Department of Bioinformatics and Data Mining combines strong computational skills with biological insights through the integrative analysis of internal and external biomedical data. Our analytical expertise spans a wide range of areas, from sequence analysis, many different omics, pathway analysis, to text-mining. We contribute to all aspects of pre-clinical research projects at Novo Nordisk, where we act as bioinformatics and data analysis experts and drive the bioinformatics analytical and application solutions and best practices across the company as well as participating in external collaborations with academic and industrial partners. We are currently a team of 20 scientists, and in addition, the department includes students and external consultants.

Bioinformatics and Data mining is anchored in the Digital Science & Innovation organisation within Research & Early Development at Novo Nordisk. DSI is responsible for driving the digital journey across all our therapy areas in R&ED. In DSI, we work in multidisciplinary teams – in strong collaboration with all areas across R&ED and R&ED IT. We participate in drug development projects across the value chain, from early discovery to pre-clinical development. We engage in external collaborations to ensure access to the latest research and technology enablers, and we automate our labs and processes, and we focus on developing and retaining top talent.

Qualifications:
To succeed in this role, you should ideally have:
- PhD in bioinformatics / computational science / biological sciences or equivalent research experience
- Experience in integrating and analyzing large genomics data sets (eg. Exome-Seq, RNA-Seq, Metabolomics) and Systems Biology/Pathway Mapping
- Experience with the scripting and programming languages common to bioinformatics, including R, Python, perl and unix/linux shell scripting
- Knowledge around disease relevant animal models and phenotypic data
- Knowledge of metabolic diseases and clinical cohorts is an advantage
- Good communication skills in presenting scientific results
