Denmark is increasingly moving forwards generating electricity from Renewable Energy Sources (RES). These plants are predominantly connected to the power system via power electronics interfaced devices (PEIDs). In 2030, RES will have the potential to supply all the power system’s demand, where additional 25GW of new RES capacity is expected to be installed compared with current supply by solar and wind. The large integration of RES will result in significant changes to the Danish power system. The replacement of synchronous generators with PEIDs will have a negative influence on maintaining system frequency and system voltage if not properly handled. It will affect fault current level, the ability to maintain power quality and to prevent adverse control interactions. These critical capabilities must continue to be adequately handled even when operating close to 100% penetration of PEIDs, in order to continue to ensure stable power system. However, the existing screening metrics to assess power system stability, such as short circuit ratio and its extended indices, are not sufficient for stability screening of high-penetration power electronics interfaced systems. It is therefore important to develop accurate stability index and criteria through which stability of the entire power systems can be evaluated in an accurate and strategic manner for a 100 % power electronics interfaced system. At the Department Power System Design, Energinet, an industrial PhD position in Development of Stability Screening Methodology for a 100 % Power Electronics Interfaced System in Danish Grid is available. This PhD project will focus on developing analytical methodologies for screening power system stability for grid planning purposes, which provide inputs and insights to workflow and strategies for system-level dynamics studies. The candidate will be employed by Energinet and enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University. Both university and company supervisors will be arranged to the PhD candidate.University supervisor / co-supervisor: Claus Leth Bak / Frede Blaabjerg / Filipe Miguel Faria da SilvaCompany supervisor / co-supervisor: Yicheng Liao / Jun Bum KwonWhat we offerAs an industrial PhD candidate, you will work part time at Energinet in Fredericia and part time at AAU Energy in Aalborg. There is the possibility of flexible periods in the company and the university, which fit your research. There is also opportunity for several-month research abroad at another institute. At the Department Power System Design, Energinet, you will contribute directly to the Danish green transition, by dealing with real-life challenges, working with specialized power system stability experts, and playing an important role in developing future solutions for assessment of power system stability. We are a subsidiary of the Energinet Group, which represents the interests of society when supplying Denmark with electricity and gas and that the energy system is converted to green energy. Our culture is closely linked to our social responsibility, and we work actively with the UN's global goals on sustainable energy, climate action, partnerships for action as well as industry, innovation, and infrastructure. By leading the way in the green transition, we can help to solve the global climate challenge. New solutions require us to be able to see problems from many different angles, and diversity is therefore a keyword in our culture. We strive to listen to, involve and share our knowledge. Based on the values of courage and trust, we focus on constantly developing ourselves as an organisation and as people. Read more at our website www.Energinet.dk.See film about Energinet.
