Professor of Economics and Management of Marine Resources and Aquaculture
Department of Food and Resource Economics
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
The Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) looks to raise the profile of its research, teaching, and outreach within the Economics and Management of Marine Resources and Aquaculture by opening a professorship in this area. The professor will be engaged in research within their field, and in collaboration with colleagues at the department and elsewhere, including interdisciplinary work related to fisheries and/or aquaculture and use and management of renewable marine resources. Key elements are to add to the understanding of 1) sustainable and efficient exploitation and management of renewable marine resources and 2) how aquatic resources can add to food security, income generation and development, without exceeding the limits of environmental sustainability.
We expect applicants to have an academic background either within economics with specialization in marine resources, or within environmental and nature management, specializing in economics of marine resources. We expect applicants to possess documented theoretical and empirical research competence of a high international standard within the economics and management of Marine Resources and Aquaculture.
The professor is expected to maintain a significant record of publication at the highest level, to encourage research achievement, and to nurture the research culture within the research group. Fund raising, external collaboration, and active participation in research networks will be a specific priority for the professor in order to enhance and sustain the development of departmental research activities. The department will support the professor in this task. The professor is expected to disseminate his/her research to multiple stakeholders outside of the university (including policy makers, NGOs, and the industry) and pursue societal impact of their research. Furthermore, the professor is expected to have contributed to innovative developments in marine resources, fisheries or aquaculture, for instance through projects having a direct social impact - either related to management or policy implementation.
Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon their own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Teaching obligations outside the core topic are to be expected.
Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. In addition, outreach to society and contributions to advisory work are expected. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department. Finally, the professor is expected to contribute broadly to development of the academic environment of the department, including taking on duties of common good character.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
