The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences covers strong and internationally recognized research areas in clinical veterinary sciences. Based on these, we want to set a new standard for cross-disciplinary research, education and innovation within animal health and disease and be among the best public workplaces in Denmark. The section holds clinical teaching and service obligations within companion animal general, internal and critical care medicine, oncology, clinical nutrition and veterinary clinical pathology and collaborates across fields nationally and internationally.

Current research activities within veterinary clinical pathology are especially focused on biomarkers of inflammation, haemostasis and cancer to support development and application of specialized diagnostics and advanced therapeutics in animal health and animal models to the benefit of both animals and humans.

Job description
When considering applications for the professorship in Veterinary Clinical Pathology, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work, research and diagnostic laboratory leadership and clinical specialist competences at an international level.

Desired scientific profile

The professor’s area of responsibility will comprise research, research leadership, teaching and service in veterinary clinical pathology and companion animal internal medicine and a main emphasis on the clinical and comparative aspects of the discipline. The professors’ scientific work should be relevant for a broad spectrum of topics and animal species within veterinary clinical pathology. The scientific and clinical specialist qualifications must be within the area of responsibility and include one or more of the following:

  • Biomarkers within veterinary haematology, inflammation, haemostasis, cancer, clinical biochemistry, endocrinology, cytology, urinalysis
  • Development, application, validation, and assessment of biomarkers and clinical pathological analyses

The professor's main tasks will be to conduct research, including scientific publication and communication, within the above academic field, provide research leadership and management, to perform research-based teaching and participate in examinations, and to lead the University of Copenhagen Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory incl. the animal biobank part of CUBE (Copenhagen Biobank for Experimental Research). The professor is also required to develop the above academic field in relation to both research based teaching and education at pre- and post-graduate levels as well as training of PhD students, residents, and post-graduate masters students. Strong laboratory management, leadership and administrative skills and experience as well as active participation in research networks is expected.

The professor is also expected to participate in knowledge exchange with society, lead a research group, raise external funding, participate in post-doctoral training and be responsible for the educational guidance of assistant professors and provide guidance and participate in assessments of students at BSc, MSc, post graduate and PhD levels.

The professor’s duties will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication
  • Research leadership as well as educational guidance and supervision of junior researchers
  • Research-based teaching with associated course responsibility at both pre- and post-graduate level (Master of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences) and examination duties. Development and administration in relationship to pre-and postgraduate teaching and service, primarily Veterinary education and post graduate master of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences (www.cacs.ku.dk ) as well as develop FagVSP (1 year specialisation for veterinary technicians) in veterinary laboratory metods.
  • Communication of research results to the public
  • Peer assessment
  • Leadership and management of The University of Copenhagen Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (www.vetdiagnostik.ku.dk )
  • External collaborations with private and public parties
  • Provide research-based education and participate in course responsibility and activities as outlined above as well as supervision of undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students within veterinary clinical pathology, oncology and internal medicine. The professor is expected to participate in the veterinary clinical pathology training during the fourth and fifth years of the veterinary education. The professor is expected to contribute significantly to the planning and development of the veterinary clinical pathology part of the trackings for senior veterinary students. The professor is further expected to participate in ph.d.-training and -education as well as in supervision and training of residents and carry out laboratory and clinical service responsibilities in collaboration with other faculty and staff members from the University Hospital of Companion Animals community practice and specialty services
  • Research-based public-sector consultancy may be required


Required qualifications

The preferred candidate must be a DVM, and must hold a Danish authorization to practice veterinary medicine or be willing to apply for this shortly after commencing the employment. In addition, the professor must hold a postgraduate degree (PhD or equivalent) within the fields of research mentioned above.

As the professor is expected to carry out laboratory service and training responsibilities in collaboration with other faculty and staff members from the University Hospital of Companion Animals community practice and specialty services, the professor must have completed a residency program, be board eligible or boarded within veterinary clinical pathology (ECVCP/ACVCP) and/or veterinary internal medicine (ECVIM/ACVIM).

The successful applicant should be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. laboratory management and engagement in the university’s external academic activities, as well as external collaboration, knowledge and technology transfer
  • Document formal pedagogical qualifications and a record of pre and post graduate research based teaching in veterinary medicine
  • Document EBVS/ABVS board eligibility/diplomate status within ECVCP/ACVCP or ECVIM/ACVIM
  • Document other relevant international education with associated certification
  • Manage research as well as communicate research results to the public
  • Take on leadership and administrative functions relating to pre-and postgraduate teaching as well as veterinary clinical pathology laboratory functions and service
  • Document external funding experience and national and international scientific networking
  • Be fluent in English


The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).
