Studiejob - Glostrup

Department of Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, The Neuroscience Centre, Rigshospitalet

Copenhagen Neurorehabilitation Research Centre (CNRC) is applying for a candidate available from the 1st of September 2023 or as soon as possible hereafter and is fixed for a 3-year term.

About the project

The INSPIRE trial investigates the ability to perform physically strenuous exercises after a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. The exercise algorithm has been developed by the researchers in charge of the project and the departments clinical staff. The primary aim of the trial is to investigate the feasibility of the intervention and as part of this, document at what intensity and dose patients can perform the exercises. The trial is conducted as a multicentre trial in Denmark in close collaboration with Melbourne, Australia.

Besides measuring the feasibility of the intervention, the study investigates functional improvements, fatigue, cognitive behaviour, and cardiovascular and metabolic health. The project is a clinical randomised trial investigating the effect of intensive exercise after brain injury. The candidate’s primary task is to prepare the trial for expected inclusion of the first patient in 2024, supervise the trial and conduct further systematic reviews in collaboration with the team, and support of other members of the trial team. Furthermore, an important aspect of this position will be to apply for further project funding in close collaboration with supervisors and the other team members.

Background

Animal and neurophysiological studies in healthy have clearly indicated the importance of intensity and repetitions when seeking to improve functional capacity and movement. Intensity in physical rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury is more sparsely investigated. The benefit of increasing the intensity of large movement exercises may also contribute to improved health, quality of life and reduced fatigue within this patient group. In the INSPIRE project we aim to investigate the possibilities of increasing intensity and the benefits and harms of such an increase.

The clinical trial (INSPIRE)

Patients with severe traumatic brain injury are often severely deconditioned besides from suffering neurological deficits.

The trial is a randomised clinical feasibility trial with the aim of including 38 patients in the two centres including a 6-month follow-up. The project is an interdisciplinary multicentre trial as project members have a background in medicine, public health, and physical therapy.

The EMPIRE and SWAY studies

When conducting clinical trials, it is important to investigate the control intervention (standard care) given. For this project we are planning two systematic reviews investigating the control intervention and the intervention given in the trial.
