A combined position as clinical professor (50 % time) and as consultant (50 % time) is vacant at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital - Vejle, University Hospital of Southern Denmark. The position is for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The clinical professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within orthopaedic surgery. Special focus areas should include epidemiologic research using national quality registries, new treatment regimens and technical aspects of hip and knee arthroplasty.

Areas of responsibility

The clinical professor will have several key responsibilities including:

  • Contributing to further development of the research strategy and profile of the department with special emphasis on orthopaedic surgery in general
  • Initiation and funding of clinical studies within hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Initiation of registry-based studies within hip and knee arthroplasty
  • Developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders in the research areas nationally and internationally

  • Participating in academic teaching, assessment work and profiling the research area
  • Taking a leading role in the above-mentioned research areas in collaboration with professors and associate professors, as well within own as other clinical specialties and departments at Lillebaelt Hospital
  • Teaching and mentoring postdocs and PhD students as well as pre-graduate students in the department and at the Esbjerg site if needed
  • Maintaining and developing both national and international collaborations including securing funding

At Lillebaelt Hospital the patient perspective is highly prioritized and applicants with a patient-centred research interest including shared-decision making are preferred.

Research activity, network, and collaboration

The clinical professor is expected to increase research activity at the research unit and expand collaboration with other researchers at hospitals in The Region of Southern Denmark, at SDU, the rest of Denmark and internationally.

The clinical position

The applicant must be qualified as a senior consultant. The clinical position will be at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital - Vejle, University Hospital of Southern Denmark. The consultant must fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of a consultant in the department of orthopaedic surgery. An important part of the position will be dedicated to hip and knee arthroplasty surgery. Section for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty is staffed with 7 consultants, 6 staff specialists and a varying number of residents.

The applicant is expected to take a leading role within own clinical fields of expertise in cooperation with other consultants in the section. Additionally, it is required in the position that 50% of the time is spent in clinical consulting duties. This will include activities in the outpatient clinic, the surgery department, the ward, and the emergency department.

Other obligations

The consultant is expected to collaborate on equal terms with the other consultants and take part in the clinical duties and responsibility for patients and junior staff, as well as for quality and efficiency of the service. Moreover, the applicant is expected to perform public duties, i.e., to chair commissions and boards etc. In addition to academic writing and tasks, the applicant is expected to be able to teach, supervise and communicate with colleagues, patients, and media. Danish or another Nordic language is therefore required.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent postgraduate research qualification and must be qualified as a consultant in orthopaedic surgery with special interest and documented experience in hip or knee arthroplasty. Additionally, the applicant must have substantial skills in both clinical aspects and research within this area. The applicant must be able to motivate, supervise, has proven research management skills, good interpersonal skills, and has visions of how to further strengthen the research unit. The applicant must be able to adopt and abide by the core values of the Lillebaelt Hospital, and it is a requirement that the applicant is accepted for appointment of both the professorship and the consultancy.

Applicants with research interests that complement epidemiologic and clinical patient-centred research will be preferred.

Furthermore, the preferred candidate has:

  • Demonstrated skills and scientific achievements within the described areas
  • Ability to motivate, supervise and has proven research management skills

  • Good interpersonal skills and visions of how to further strengthen research at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
  • A strong publication record and significant experience in raising external funding

Danish will not be required initially, but must be mastered at proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

Salary and terms of employment

The successful applicant for the clinical professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
