The R&D Process Upscaling department is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic scientist to develop production processes for new bacterial cultures within bioprotection, plant-, animal- and human health as well as dairy, meat and wine applications.
The team for you to join
Upscaling is a highly diverse team of scientists and a PhD student, centrally placed within R&D and Process Development in Hørsholm. Our core expertise lies within development of fermentation processes and transfer from lab and pilot plant scales to industrial scale production. As we are selling active and live bacteria, we deliver robust processes for our bacterial cultures based on experimental set-up with focus on both upstream and downstream processing and ensuring stable cultures.
The processes we develop are implemented in Chr. Hansen’s culture plants globally. We are a crucial part of new product development projects and see ourselves as the interface between the business and production, ensuring that requirements from all stakeholders are met.
What would your role look like?
As Research Scientist in Upscaling you will scale up bacterial cultures for new product development projects within all business areas by applying scientific and engineering principles and practices.

Who are we looking for?
You hold a MSc or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Chemical Engineering or related scientific field and you have extensive experience in microbial fermentation and in-depth physiology of bacteria – preferably within lactic acid bacteria. Knowledge on anaerobes or Bacillus is also a plus. Being our new colleague in Upscaling, we expect you to be a true team-player with strong interpersonal skills, you are outgoing, communicative and not shy of speaking up. You have the ability to work independently, you are proactive and find it natural to challenge existing procedures and processes. As you can expect to work on several projects in parallel, it is important that you can navigate in an environment with various projects and stakeholders, and that you can drive and execute on projects with short deadlines and diverse deliverables aligned with the strategic goals of Chr. Hansen.

What would your role look like?
As Research Scientist in Upscaling you will scale up bacterial cultures for new product development projects within all business areas by applying scientific and engineering principles and practices.
In addition you will:
- Apply statistical tools such as Design of Experiment and Multivariate Data Analysis to ensure delivery of high product yield and optimal performance
- Take part in the implementation of designed processes in our culture plants
- Drive cross-functional activities and collaborate with external industrial and academic partners
- Take responsibility for process equipment in our state-of-the-art lab facilities, making sure they are always up to date
- Take part in setting the digital agenda in R&D Process Development with focus on exploring new digital and automation opportunities
- Apply innovative approaches and technologies to achieve application goals and to challenge the status quo
Who are we looking for?

Furthermore you have:
- Experience with process development or production of bacterial cultures
- Knowhow of bioprocessing, including aseptic techniques, separation techniques, downstream processes and process scale-up
- Understanding of the principles of the underlying technical functionalities of fermentation equipment
- Experience in microscale screening and subsequent high content data analysis
- Experience in working with statistical tools for Design of Experiment and Multivariate Data Analysis and in programming languages such as R or Python
- Fluency in English, both orally and in writing, since our corporate language is English
