Do you have experience in glaciological observations and/or numerical modelling of ice sheets? Would you like to be part of a team of active research scientists in an international working environment? GEUS is looking to hire a post doc in two a year position in the Department of Glaciology and Climate to contribute to research projects related to monitoring of the Greenland ice sheet and be will be funded by the PROMICE and GC-Net monitoring programs and ESA projects. The starting date is as soon as possible.

Job description
The position will be within the research area of glaciology and remote sensing and is placed in the GEUS glaciology group. You will participate in research and monitoring tasks related the Greenland ice sheet and Arctic land ice areas. The work will be related to monitoring of the physical properties of land ice and the surface mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet, including analysis of surface climate station data. You may also participate in glaciological field work.

Your qualifications
The appointment will be made on the basis of academic qualifications. You should have a PhD degree or equal qualifications within geophysics, engineering or a similar discipline. You should have experience. You should have experience with remote sensing, radiative transfer modelling of snow and ice, boundary layer meteorology and/or modelling of ice. Skills in scientific programming and in the manipulation of large amounts of data are paramount. Applicants should clearly define computing competences.

We are seeking innovative and focused persons who are good at working independently as well as collaboratively. You should have strong problem solving skills and are capable of developing new methods and applications within glaciology.

Proficiency in both written and spoken English is essential. Non-Danish applicants must be willing to attend Danish courses.

Department of Glaciology and Climate
The department has a staff of about 30 researchers, PhD students and postdocs. The department has an informal and friendly working environment, and a strong international and interdisciplinary profile.

The department includes two main groups, with collaboration across the two groups. The Glaciology group is responsible for monitoring the mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet and is engaged in multiple research and advisory projects dealing with glacier and climate dynamics. The PACE (Past Climate and Environments) research group is dedicated to Holocene and Anthropocene climate change and its impacts including ice-ocean interactions in Greenland and cryosphere change impacts on marine ecosystems. Besides doing research, we provide advice to the authorities in Denmark and Greenland as well as companies and institutions, both nationally and internationally and provide mentoring and supervision to University students.

PhD diploma, as well as a summary of the PhD or other material that can document qualifications at Research Scientist level.
Submitted PhD theses that have not yet been defended may be sent with the application and will be included in the assessment. The PhD thesis must be approved by the University prior to appointment.

The appointment procedure
An expert academic assessment committee consisting of two internal senior researchers will make an individual evaluation of applicants’ academic qualifications, where candidates are deemed qualified or non-qualified in relation to the position advertised. Then an appointments committee decide which of the qualified candidates they want to call for a job interview. The procedure is in accordance with “Circular on the appointment and assessment of academic staff at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland”, Sections 4 and 7.
