København K

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 2 year Postdoc position to work within population genomics at the Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Center, to commence 16 July 2021.

Our research
The Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Centre was founded with the mission to lay out a new avenue for studies in population genomics and of the origins of common endogenous human disorders and infectious diseases, which promote a perception of these disorders as a consequence of evolution. The Center is highly interdisciplinary.

We aim to characterize the population dynamics throughout the past 10.000 years of human history in Eurasia and to map the evolutionary paths and processes, which led to the genetic architecture of human traits and common diseases in contemporary humans, as well as the violence of infectious pathogens. We use high-throughput shot gun sequencing as the off set to map the genomes of ancient human remains. Within the Center we strive towards an environment based on strong team-oriented spirit and we are engaged in a strong international network of research group from around the world. The Centre is embedded within the GLOBE Institute, that is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The Institute’s main purpose is to address basic scientific questions through interdisciplinary approaches. The institute operates at the intersection of natural sciences, medical sciences and the humanities.

Your job
The position is integrated within the team of researcher and technical staff of the Lundbeck Foundation GeoGenetics Center. You will be the anchor person for addressing some of the many unanswered questions about the population history and genomic diversity of prehistoric individuals from East Asia and the population dynamics of the early human populations in Europe. The project will utilize an in-house collection of human remains collected over a period of several years as well as samples that will be excavated during 2021. A key challenge for working with remains from these parts of the world and from prehistoric time periods is the poor preservation of the samples. You will be responsible for the lab work to produce genomic data and for completing the population genetic analyses. Within this overall framework, you will have some freedom to design additional projects in consultation with the advisors.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with deep knowledge in early East Asia and European population history. The ideal candidate has proven exaptational skills in generating genomic data from poor preserved samples and who has shown talent for computational population genomics.

Essential experience and skills:

  • You hold a PhD in population genetics, and with experience working with both low and high coverage genomic datasets, from predominately ancient sources of biological materials.
  • You are highly experienced in sequence data production and data curation from poor preserved samples.
  • You have an active interest in population history with specific knowledge in prehistory East Asia and Europe.
  • You are experienced in relevant programming languages and have experience in applying statistical methods to analyse 'omics data.
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams.
  • An excellent publication track record.
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at the GLOBE Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and powerful computing infrastructure.

Terms of employment
