The Section for Science Education at the Department of Science Education seeks to appoint an assistant professor within university science education with a focus on PhD supervision. The position is a four-year position, and it is open from December 1st, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.

We seek applicants who have documented experience with university education research and want to direct their focus on the field of supervision of PhD students in the natural sciences and mathematics. The successful candidate will lead, and be the primary researcher in, a department funded research project that aims to investigate the experiences of PhD students and/or PhD supervisors at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. Two more senior researchers from the department with experience in the field will participate in the project. Further, a group of external researchers who are experts in the field will be affiliated with the project and provide guidance. The project will last 42 months and start 3 months after the start of the employment of the successful candidate so that the candidate can contribute to shaping the project before it starts. Since this is a key future research field, the department plans to develop this research field also in a longer time scale.

Duties & responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to conduct

  • Research that is relevant to the mission of the project
  • Day-to-day project management
  • Teaching on university science education – particularly related to competence development for university staff at other departments,
  • Other tasks requested by the Department – including engaging with and participating in Department and Faculty governance structures.

Formal expectations of the candidate

Applicants must have a relevant PhD – e.g., within social or educational sciences – and a record of qualitative research in university education which is commensurable with the position level applied.

Assessment of applicants

Applicants will primarily be assessed according to their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory, but we greatly value documented experience with teaching and supervision related to the competence development of university teachers.

Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates.
