The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a postdoc in Lexicography and Uto-Aztecan linguistics starting on 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a fixed-term position for 36 months.

Job content

We are hiring a research postdoc in field linguistics for the ERC funded project SUAHIST, based at the University of Copenhagen. The postdoc will be working remotely in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, in close collaboration with two teams of linguists documenting lexicon and narratives in the Uto-Aztecan languages Wixárika and Náayeri, under the remote supervision of Dr. Magnus Pharao Hansen at the Institute of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

The primary responsibilities of the position will be to participate in building the two databases, to coordinate the work of the two teams, and to manage the lexical databases maintaining its data quality. Other responsibilities will include text collection through field work in the communities, as well as transcription and glossing, and certain administrative tasks in the management of the operations of the field teams and coordination with the University of Copenhagen-based team. The job will also require occasional short term stays in Denmark, as well as possibly travel to present research at conferences in Europe and the US.

Qualification requirements

Appointment as a postdoc presumes research qualifications on at least PhD level.

Required:

  • PhD in linguistics or a related field, preferably with a focus in the fields of lexicography, or language documentation.
  • Ability to relocate to Tepic, Nayarit for the project period of three years (september 2024 - august 2027).
  • Fluency in Spanish

Desired skills and experience:

  • Experience with fieldwork in indigenous communities in Mexico
  • Experience with database maintenance
  • Familiarity with language documentation software such as ELAN and FLex
  • Familiarity with one or more Uto-Aztecan languages
  • Interest in lexicography, semantics, and morphology
  • Experience living and working in Mexico

  • Peer-reviewed publications:
    • Monographs and anthologies
    • Articles in journals
    • Book chapters/anthology contributions, etc.

  • Non-peer-reviewed publications:
    • Publications disseminating research findings, etc.


Applicants can attach a maximum of three publications. The publication dates must be clearly marked on the list. The selected publications must be uploaded as attachments and numbered 1–3.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English, Spanish, German and French will be evaluated.

Assessment criteria

Applicants will primarily be assessed in relation to their research qualifications, including their publications, ability to conduct independent research and participate in research collaborations, and their experience of research management. In addition, the applicant’s qualifications and research potential will be assessed in relation to the overall fit with the SUAHIST project described above.

The recruitment process

Once the deadline for applications has expired, the head of department will consider advice from the appointment committee and select applicants for assessment. All applicants will be notified whether they have been shortlisted. The Dean will then set up an expert assessment committee to consider the applications. The selected applicants will be informed who is serving on the committee. They will be offered the opportunity to comment on the committee’s assessment of their application before the appointment is announced.

Remuneration and terms of employment

The appointment is for a fixed term of 36 months and will be made in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). In addition, a total pension contribution of 17.1% of salary and pensionable supplements will be allocated. It will be possible to negotiate further supplements on the basis of qualifications.
