The Department of Glaciology and Climate at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is hiring a postdoctoral fellow for a period of 24 months, with an ideal start date of 1 January 2025.
About the position
We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who can assist with the project “Confirming Subglacial Hot Springs in Northeast Greenland”, funded by the Independent Research Fund of Denmark. The primary specific tasks of this postdoctoral fellow will be: (1) developing an algorithm to identify known persistent land surface hot spots in thermal imagery, and (2) applying this algorithm to the available archive of recent satellite imagery in Greenland to identify previously unknown persistent land surface hot spots.
The postdoctoral fellow will lead a large work package within a team environment. This remote sensing task will be executed in combination with collaborator field investigations at known subaerial hot springs. The postdoctoral fellow will therefore participate in team-level publications on various topics of cryospheric processes in Greenland. There is the opportunity to participate in aligned Greenland fieldwork. Postdoctoral fellows will be encouraged and mentored to develop into independent researchers.
Who are you?
The appointment will be made based on academic qualifications. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in Natural Sciences or Engineering and have documented experience attesting to the job description above. Previous work batch processing with Google Earth Engine, Sentinel Hub, or similar remote platform, is therefore highly desirable. Knowledge of Landsat-8/9 B10 thermal imagery is also an asset. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. The department also places a high value on cross-disciplinary and cross-institution collaborations, as well as team-level outreach activities.
Meet your new colleagues
Our department studies both the current and past climate forcing, and response, of the Greenland ice sheet and the ocean surrounding it. Relevant to this postdoctoral fellowship, Greenland’s current ice loss is studied using a network of climate stations (including the GC-Net and PROMICE networks), satellite observations, and numerical modeling. Besides doing research, we provide advice to government agencies and the private sector and provide supervision to university students.
The department has an international staff of c. 30 researchers, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. We have a great focus on multi-disciplinary collaboration across the department and conduct department seminars and other activities to foster this. We also prioritize social arrangements to welcome and integrate new employees to our informal and friendly working environment.

This procedure is in accordance with the “Order on employment and assessment of scientific staff at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland § 4 and 7”.
