Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in geochemistry and magmatic petrology commencing 01.11.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The Section of Geology is part of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and is located on Øster Voldgade 10 in the central part of Copenhagen. The institute hosts a lively PhD environment and weekly seminars and a yearly hard rock meeting provide a stimulating research environment. The successful applicant will be working daily in the Research group of Geochemical, Mineralogical and Petrological Earth Science, which includes analytical facilities such as EMPA, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS, and several TIMS instruments. The research group is involved in a wide range of research activities within geochemistry and petrology of ocean island and within plate magmatism, subduction zones and Greenland Archean complexes, mineralogy and redox-sensitive isotope systems.
Project description
The research project is centered on investigating the Quaternary silicic volcanism of the Loicas trough in the southern Andes ~35-37 ⁰S through a geochemical and volcanological study to characterize magma sources and magma chamber conditions as well as the explosivity of the magmatism. The extensional Loicas trough is situated behind the main arc front in an otherwise compressional tectonic regime and hosts a number of calderas and silicic volcanoes, a.o. the Domuyo volcano, and the younger Tromen volcano with associated basaltic cinder cones. A recent tomographic study has shown that the trough hosts large shallow magma reservoirs, and the goal is therefore to assess the risk of future eruptions. The applied analytical methods will primarily be whole rock elemental modeling, Sr, Nd, Pb-DS isotopes, and microprobe and laser ablation analyses of minerals for thermobarometric purposes. The student is expected to participate in field work in Argentina in the first weeks of January 2020.
Principal supervisor is Assistant Professor, Nina Søager, Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, E-mail: [email protected], Direct Phone: +45 35 33 29 75.
