A PhD position is available in the Center for Chromosome Stability (www.ccs.ku.dk) in a group headed by Prof Ian D. Hickson. The post is available from October 1st, 2019 (or at a mutually agreed date). Highly motivated and committed candidates with an interest in chromosome structure and disease are encouraged to apply.
The post is fully funded, although the post-holder will be encouraged to seek a personal fellowship to support his/her PhD stipend.
Our group and research
The CCS is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation, and has as its mission on understanding of how chromosomal instability causes human disease. The CCS is embedded at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (www.icmm.ku.dk).
Project description
The project is part of collaboration between the Hickson and Lopez-Contreras groups in the CCS and will focus on understanding the molecular basis for developmental disorders in man caused by abnormalities in the protein Topoisomerase III (TOP3). TOP3 is required for DNA repair and genome stabilization through altering the topological state of DNA. The project will involve multiple methodologies, including biophysical and cell biological techniques, as well as characterization of a mouse model of the human disease.
The project will be overseen primarily by Dr. Anna H. Bizard, an expert on DNA topology
Start: October 2019.

Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project e.g. biology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics

The place of employment is at Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories.
Terms of employment and employment
The employment as a PhD fellow is full time and for 3 years. Starting date is October 1, 2019 or by agreement.
The post is conditional upon the candidate’s successful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidate in consultation with the supervisors.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 26.755 DKK /approx. 3.567 EUR (April 2018-level) plus pension.

- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic person with the following competences and experience:
- Must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related area of biology or biophysics.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work well in an international academic setting.
- Ability to work in a team of multidisciplinary scientists, and the potential to work independently with limited direction.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
- A track record of publication-standard research
