A 4 years Assistant Professorship in motor disorders is available in Prof. Ole Kiehn laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, starting from 1 April 2020, or as soon as possible.
We are looking for an outstanding, independent and highly motivated candidate interested in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and motor system neuroscience. This position is opened to candidates with PhD degree and at least 4 years of postdoc experience and offers the opportunity to work in an excellent team engaged in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis research.
The Department
The Department of Neuroscience offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs focused on cell biology, brain circuits and higher brain functions in health and disease. More information about the Department can be found here https://in.ku.dk
The successful applicant will be expected to teach for a total of at least 100 hours per year.
Our laboratory and research
Our laboratory offers a highly international and interdisciplinary environment and our research aims on understanding mechanisms by which neurons and neuronal networks operate to generate movements. The posted position focuses on investigating the role of spinal networks in the neurodegenerative disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Only candidates with extensive experience in neurodegeneration, transcriptomics analysis, gene therapy, stem cell biology and regenerative medicine will be taken in consideration. The experimental approach relies heavily on in vivo and in vitro techniques, such as mouse genetics, stem cell differentiation, mRNA sequencing, behavioral assays, viral tracing and in situ sequencing. Extraordinarily motivated and ambitious candidates, with a strong publication record are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
The candidate should have proven skills in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis research, molecular and cellular biology, stem cell biology, transcriptomics analysis, behavioral testing for motor disorders, mouse genetics, gene-therapy application for regenerative purposes and viral tracing.
Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated and should show a wish to become a leader in the field. In all cases, the ability to perform the job will be the primary consideration, thus we encourage to apply regardless of personal background.
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a PhD degree related to the subject area of the project e.g. neuroscience, biology, biomedicine, or similar.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories in the Mearsk Tower and in Panum.
Terms of employment
The employment as assistant professor is a full time and fixed-term position for 4 years.
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 34,300 DKK/ approx. 4,480 Euro (October 2019-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of December 11, 2019.

- Accredited course in Laboratory Animal Science according to Danish Animal Experimentation Act (FELASA) level C, enabling the candidate to execute independent laboratory work (mandatory)
- Prior experience in ALS research (mandatory)
- Mouse colony maintenance (mandatory)
- Previous training in molecular biology techniques and stem cell biology (mandatory)
- Experience with stereotactic injection (mandatory)
- Experience with behavioral motor testing (mandatory)
- Cloning, genetic engineering of stem cells, viral vector production (mandatory)
- Experience in tissue handling for in situ hybridization and mRNA sequencing
- Proficiency in spoken and written English. Candidates should possess good oral communication skills
- Curious mind-set with a strong interest in ALS and motor system Neuroscience
- Strong analytical communication and computer skills are also required
- Well-organized, self-motivated, result-oriented and capable of working independently in a collaborative setting
- Strong publication record in neuroscience and neurodegenerative disorders
- Proven record of obtaining external founding will be considered an advantage
