The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant with experience in gut microbial metabolites and their GPCR sensors to commence May 20, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Our research
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010, and in 2017 we moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.

The Center has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.

Our group and research
The aim of the Schwartz Group is to understand the structural and functional basis for how signaling metabolites and their specific GPCR sensors control endocrine, metabolic and immune functions as the basis for developing novel means to prevent and treat obesity, diabetes and cancer. Read more about the group here.

Your job
The candidate will characterize interaction of gut microbial metabolites, i.e. in particular short chain fatty acids (SCFA), with GPCR sensors on enteroendocrine cells with focus on cellular expression and ligand activation of both established and novel SCFA GPCRs. You will work both with histological in situ hybridization techniques combined with immunohistochemistry and with molecular pharmacological characterization of SCFA activation of receptor mediated activation of signal transduction. A major part of the job will also be to perform data analysis, communication with collaborators, oral presentations at internal and external meetings and writing up papers.

Your profile

Training and experience:

  • Master’s degree in human biology, molecular biomedicine, or similar biological field.
  • Training and extensive experience in basic cell biology and molecular biology methods is required.
  • Hands-on experience in collecting and preparing tissue in particular from the GI-tract for histological analysis as well as extensive hands-on experience in tissue preparation and histological analysis including RNA scope in situ hybridization methods combined with immunohistological analysis as well as quantitative analysis of results from these is required.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in setting up and analyzing different types of signal transduction assays, including cell culture work as well as designing and cloning of expresssion plasmids, transfections etc. are required.
  • Extensive experience in data analysis and presentation of data from signal transduction assays is require.
