At BRIC a position as Research Assistant is vacant from 1 February 2024, or after agreement.

Job description
We are looking for an enthusiastic research assistant to join the team of the ERC project “STRUCTOMATIC” and play an important role in obtaining material and preparing DNA/RNA from cancer cell lines and tumor tissues, and performing DNA/RNA sequencing at a medium scale (100s of biological samples).

This will be accomplished by liaising with external collaborators, acquiring samples of cells/tissues from collaborators, processing them to extract DNA/RNA, performing quality-control and library prep on the DNA/RNA, and sequencing it on an Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencer. Generated genomic (or mRNA) data needs to be organized in a catalog, where it will form a central resource for the lab’s research in cancer genome evolution. Finally, the research assistant will also support other team members in tasks related with cell culture of cancer cell lines.

Information on the department can be found at: https://www.bric.ku.dk/.

Our research
The Supek group is home to a highly interdisciplinary team, working at the intersection of genomics, molecular biology, and artificial intelligence. In our studies, we are striving for excellence and impact – we aim to do science that pushes the boundaries of knowledge, and that benefits human health and development. The lab employs cutting-edge technologies in DNA/RNA sequencing (e.g. Nanopore data generation and analysis), gene editing (e.g. Cas12a combinatorial disruption) and artificial intelligence (e.g. DNA and protein language models).

In addition to focus on high-impact research projects (ERC “HYPER-INSIGHT”, ERC “STRUCTOMATIC”), the Supek group also has a broad network of international collaborators across Europe (see e.g. EU Horizon consortia “DECIDER” and “LUCIA”, where we study ovarian and lung cancer genomes, respectively). The lab fosters a dynamic atmosphere where excitement about science is valued. We are highly committed to mentoring and career development of all our members.

Profile
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project. Please note that your master’s degree must be equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (two years).
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic colleague with the following competencies and experience:

  • You have a degree at Master level.
  • You are experienced in laboratory techniques dealing with manipulation of tissues and cells, DNA/RNA extraction and quality-control, and mammalian cell culture.
  • You have an active interest in taking part in an exciting, collaborative scientific project, communicating with external collaborators and coordinating collaboration activities (e.g. obtaining cells/tissue samples).
  • You have an active interest in using cutting-edge sequencing techniques (Nanopore long read sequencing).
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Very good English skills, written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills:

  • Experience in laboratory techniques dealing with handling of mammalian tissues, mammalian cell culture (passaging, viability assays, expansion of clones), and DNA/RNA extraction and quality-control.
  • Experience in laboratory techniques for recombinant DNA, including library prep for sequencing, PCR or cloning.
  • Experience with administration/coordination of larger research projects involving multiple external collaborators, including liaising with collaborators.
  • Experience with organizing acquisition/shipping/storing/cataloguing of material (reagents, cells, tissues, DNAs) from external sources.
  • Optionally, experience with use of genomics databases (e.g. SRA, dbGaP, EGA, GEO…) and work with DNA/RNA sequence data is a plus but not mandatory.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 3 years and is to commence 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Salary, pension, and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or another relevant organisation.

Currently, the monthly salary starts at 31,147 DKK/approx. 4,175 EUR (October 2023 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
