Professorship at the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint a Full time professor within the field of Bioanalytical Chemistry – Biopharmaceuticals and Protein Drug Targets - at Department of Pharmacy to commence as soon as possible.

Job description In considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of bioanalytical chemistry and the analysis of proteins and biopharmaceuticals using liquid-phase separations hyphenated to mass spectrometry. Current research within this field is at the Department of Pharmacy mainly comprised by research activities in the Protein Analysis Group, but linked to activities in many other research groups. Biopharmaceuticals represent the fastest growing class of drugs in development in the pharmaceutical industry. However, advanced bioanalytical chemistry methods capable of analyzing the structure, interactions and quantity of these large and complex biomolecules is critical to unleash the full pharmaceutical potential of such biological molecules and guide and drive their pharmaceutical development.

The candidate’s research should focus on bioanalytical chemistry of biopharmaceuticals and protein drug targets, and the application and development of new analytical methods to analyse their structure, purity and quantity. Experience in the use of liquid chromatography/separations and mass spectrometry for analysis of proteins is considered important. Expertise in the use of hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry or other covalent labelling strategies to analyse the higher-order structure and interactions of proteins of pharmaceutical relevance is considered important for the position. The candidate should preferably also demonstrate experience in collaboration with the pharmaceutical and/or biotech industry, and experience in teaching and dissemination within the field. As the chair in this research field, the appointee is expected to play a significant role in the strategic effort to promote bioanalytical chemistry with emphasis on biopharmaceuticals and protein targets to strengthen the impact on the development of new drugs.

The professor’s duties will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Submission of grant applications for national and international sources
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments
  • Research-based collaboration with public and private partners

The successful applicant must be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at a high international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Formal pedagogical qualifications and a record of teaching in pharmaceutical analytical sciences and must be able to provide research-based teaching
  • Ability to attract external funding from both national and international sources
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching
  • Research-based collaborations together with industrial partners

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2020).
