We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 2-year position focusing on the interaction between phytoplankton and zooplankton communities, community size structure and role of lipids in the flow of carbon towards sequestration. The position is funded by Queen Margrethe’s and Vigdís Finnbogadóttir´s Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Ocean, Climate, and Society and is offered in close collaboration between the University of Copenhagen (Globe institute, Centre for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Aqua, section for Oceans and Arctic). You will work closely with Prof. Katherine Richardson at Copenhagen University and Dr. Sigrún Jónasdóttir at DTU. As zooplankton culturing and laboratory facilities are not found at the University of Copenhagen, the laboratory activities associated with the position will be hosted by DTU Aqua. In addition to conducting cutting edge research, ROCS aims to foster links between research communities in Denmark and Iceland and you will be expected to spend time in both countries. A research cruise is planned for summer, 2024.

Our research
The ROCS Centre aims to describe the relationship between ecosystem structure on land and in the ocean in relation to past climate changes. This is done by analysing eDNA in ocean and lake sediments. Process studies in the contemporary ocean are used to estimate biologically mediated carbon flow in the historic ocean based on the information retrieved from the eDNA proxies of historical ecosystems. Working in the Centre requires both teamwork and a commitment to understanding and working with collaborators with expertise in disciplines other than your own.

Your job
Your research will contribute to understanding the factors influencing the size structure of zooplankton communities in the contemporary ocean with a focus on identifying the factors influencing abundance of mesozooplankton. It will also inform understanding of the role of zooplankton in ocean carbon sequestration by focusing on developing a better understanding of the “lipid pump”.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

• A PhD degree
• Work experience with marine zooplankton
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate collaboration as well as take responsibility and work independently.
• Proficient communications skills.
• You work with attention to detail and follow work through to completion.
• Excellent English skills (written and spoken).

Desirable experience and skills:

• Knowledge of lipids/carbon sequestration in the ocean.
• Experience with both field and laboratory work.

Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years. The starting date is on 1 February 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,728 DKK/approx. 4,800 EUR (October 2022 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The further process
