Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position within the field of multiphysics, multi-scale simulation of metal additive manufacturing (MAM) for topology optimization accounting for manufacturing constraints and carried out at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Topology optimization is traditionally performed by considering the deployment case of the part and its different loading scenarios. A procedure during which information from the manufacturing process is seldom considered, if at all.

Hence, you will in general develop multiphysics, multi-scale models for MAM accounting for heat transfer, fluid flow as well as stresses and strains. These models will subsequently be used for assigning realistic manufacturing constraints for the topology optimization. An important part of the project is model development at different length scales involving representative volume elements (RVEs) and homogenization.

Candidates should document experience within several of the fields: Computational heat transfer and thermomechanics, numerical methods especially finite elements, multiphysics modelling of metal additive manufacturing processes, metallurgy as well as experimental methods for materials characterization.

In addition to the direct project related research, you will attend courses, conduct teaching related activities, disseminate your research through publication of papers and attending conferences and internationalize by research stay abroad.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree in a relevant area such as Mechanical Engineering or Materials Engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The position is a full-time position with starting date according to mutual agreement.
