The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute at University of Southern Denmark in Odense seeks to recruit a head for its Applied AI and Data Science Centre. The appointment will be as professor or associate professor depending on academic qualifications. Talent for leadership and experience in translating AI and Data Science into real world impact will be important. A central mission will be to maintain and further excellence in the research and education of the centre.

The Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute is an internationally recognized institute, which has maintained a leading position in robotics for more than three decades. The institute is the origin of robotics research in Denmark and has spawned the world-renowned cluster of robotics in Odense with more than 130 robotics companies including Universal Robots and Mobile Industrial Robots. Building on our expertise in robotics and software, we have raised strong research centres in related domains, such as Health Informatics and Energy Informatics, and in recent years also put the institute in the lead of drone research.

Job description
AI and Data Science are central to our activities in Robotics, as well as a broad range of other domains, including medicine, health, and renewable energy. You will interact with a dynamic group of researchers working in interdisciplinary teams on developing potent solutions to societal challenges. An essential task for the head of the Centre for Applied AI and Data Science will be to identify and implement a portfolio of scientifically broad and sound projects that all start from clear risk/value assessment and are conducted with recurring assessment of outcome prospects in terms of lives saved, enhanced value of life, etc.
As head of centre, you will be responsible for all academic and economic aspects of the centre and its staff including attracting and nurturing talent, and development and implementation of strategy. You will report to the Head of the Department and be part of the leadership group of the institute.
We expect
You have a PhD in a computational or engineering discipline relevant to this position, and you have a strong academic record and funding success commensurate with the targeted rank (professor or associate professor) within the area of Applied AI and Data Science.
Ideally you have experience doing research in commercial contexts, and bringing technology all the way from proof of concept to validation in real life settings, including identification of value propositions, risk analysis, and strategic partnership building with awareness of regulatory constraints
You are an excellent collaborator, able to work in complex international multi-stakeholder environments. You are an effective and inspiring communicator and an attentive listener.
You have leadership experience, visions, and foresights to identify, leverage and further develop the competitive advantage of the centre and its staff. You will participate in the collective actions with fellow leaders across the institute, faculty and beyond.

Conditions of employment
The candidate should have a PhD degree within the mentioned research area.
