A PhD position within environmental physical chemistry is available at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy funded by the Danish Research Council’s programme on “Green Transition”.
Starting date: 1 September 2021. Application deadline: 27 June 2021.
Project background
Recovery of phosphate, a limited resource and pollutant, from a complex water matrix is challenging. Phosphate selective sorbents is an emerging technology, where phosphate is captured by high-affinity filter materials and subsequently regenerated, and the phosphate is recovered for further processing resulting in chemically well-defined phosphate rich products. The objective of this PhD project is to develop porous sorbents based on layered double hydroxides (LDH) and test their performance in a selection of phosphate rich waters. This will be achieved by combining analytical chemistry with advanced characterization techniques including especially solid-state NMR spectroscopy.
The PhD project is hosted at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Southern Denmark with Professor Ulla Gro Nielsen as supervisor. Collaborators include Associate Professor Kasper Reitzel, Department of Biology, SDU (co-supervisor); the NMR research unit, Oulu University, Finland; the LDH group, Université d’Auvergne, France; and Vandcenter Syd, Odense. The project includes two months of secondment at both Oulu University, and Université d’Auvergne to perform hyperpolarized NMR and materials synthesis, respectively. The project will be in close collaboration with ongoing research projects related to phosphate recovery including the MC-ITN RecaP.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic materials using a combination of analytical chemistry and advanced charaterization technique especially solid state NMR spectroscopy. The candidate will hold a master in chemistry, materials science or a closely related topic and is expected to have documented experience within physical chemistry and/or materials synthesis. Previous experience with acquisition, analyses, and interpretation of solid state NMR data or other advanced characterization techniques, e.g. synchtron or neutron-based methods is a prerequisite.
The candidate must be independent and fluent in English both oral and written as well be able to work in an interdisciplinary, international environment.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
