Studiejob - Odense M

We are opening one or more PhD positions at the Danish Centre for Population Research as part of the Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics (CPop) at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark. Position(s) will start in early 2022.

The Centre is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences and collaborates with researchers in economics and political science, as well as researchers in other fields including evolutionary ecology, conservation biology, mathematics and data analysis in the Faculty of Sciences, epidemiology, biostatistics, biodemography and health economics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and literature and media science in the Faculty of Humanities.

An applicant should have (or will soon receive) an M.A. or equivalent degree in Demography, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Political Science, Policy Analysis, Evolutionary Ecology, Conservation Biology or related fields.

An applicant should be strongly committed to interdisciplinary research on population dynamics.

The Centre is looking for applicants with a solid education in or experience with statistical and/or mathematical methods and demographic analysis.

It would be desirable if an applicant is interested in research in one or more of the following areas:

- Modeling and forecasting mortality and health after age 50 and especially after age 90,
- Understanding the causes of inequality of lifespans after age 50 and the characteristics of people with short vs. long lifespans, and/or
- Modeling the difference between and the ratio of male and female death and morbidity rates over age, time and population.

Furthermore, it would also be desirable if an applicant was interested in statistical methods for analyzing large data sets. Knowledge of SAS or R and of deep learning methods would be useful.

Your employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of 10 November 2015 on Graduate Employees in government appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows. The scholarship runs for three years.

An application must include:

- Detailed CV
- Cover letter including research interests
- A certified copy of your master’s degree certificate including all examination results
- Application form (please see below)
- A project description (max 5 pages of 2400 characters each, including spaces, notes, appendices, bibliography etc.)
- An abstract for the above project description of no more than 250 words
- Information on teaching experience or other forms of knowledge communication
- Information on publications, if any.

All documents not in English, Danish, Swedish or Norwegian must be translated into English.

Applications that are incomplete with regard to the above requirements will not be assessed by the committee.

Applications will be assessed by a committee. Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. When the evaluation committee has submitted its report, shortlisted applicants will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her.

As part of the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, an interview may be requested.
