Odense M

We invite applications for a three-year postdoc position in synthetic biology of methanogenic archaea. The Novo Nordisk Foundation funds this position on a grant which is part of its ambitious Research Leader Programme intended to continue developing top researchers in the Nordic Region. The project will be carried out within Nordcee at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The starting date for the position is 1 April 2022 or soon after. Application deadline: 1 December 1 2021.

Project background & job description
We face three challenges: producing chemicals sustainably, capturing carbon dioxide, and storing renewable electricity. This Novo Nordisk-funded project deals with the fundamental understanding of a technology where all three challenges are addressed concomitantly. A year ago, we discovered that Methanosarcina captures renewable electricity directly from an electrode to convert carbon dioxide (e.g. from biogas) to methane – a fuel we can easily store. Methanosarcina has unusual cell surface biology. It does not possess the typical electron transfer conduit described in bacteria. It has the thickest cell wall a prokaryote has ever “seen” (approx. 160nm), which is highly responsive to environmental stressors. Therefore, we anticipate an unprecedented mechanism of interactions with extracellular electron donors like electrodes. The results will be of general importance for the understanding of biogas upgrading via electromethanogenesis.

The postdoc project will explore the mechanisms of direct electron uptake in Methanosarcinas and genetically manipulate these organisms to improve yield. We seek a highly motivated candidate with a documented academic background and lab experience in synthetic biology and omics of methanogens. The candidate is expected to work closely with two PhD students who cover other aspects of the research like cellular biology and bioelectrochemistry.

Who we are
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team covering microbial physiology, cell biology, electromicrobiology and bioengineering.

The successful candidate will be employed by the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark and will work at Nordcee, a section at this department. The section employs nine professors with associated junior staff and hosts the Electromicrobiology group, with which the project is associated. Research at the section integrates basic and applied science and covers studies in geobiology, evolution, microbial physiology, biotechnology and climate. Some of which address global challenges like greenhouse gas mitigation, life below water, climate actions, and responsible consumption and production. The section has well-equipped laboratories and permanent supporting staff – five laboratory technicians, one administrator.

Qualifications:

  • a PhD degree in a field relevant to the project, i.e. synthetic biology, genetics, omics.
  • a solid background in microbial genetics and synthetic biology.
  • lab experience with genetic engineering of methanogens is desirable.
  • ability to develop and follow up on new ideas, coupled with an interest to apply for external funding within the Danish funding landscape.
  • proficiency in spoken and written English.

We are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic about synthetic biology and its applications in future technologies. You should be independent, and interested in working in an interdisciplinary environment, sharing ideas, and collaborating with people from different fields.

The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the link "Apply online". Attached files must be in Adobe PDF or Word format. Each box can only contain a single file of max. 10 Mb. We strongly recommend that you read How to apply before you apply.
