We are offering an associate professor position in Coastal and Marine Food Web Ecology. This position is available at the Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Odense and is associated with the Ecology Research Group.
Starting date: 1 January 2022 (or as negotiated). Application deadline: 16 August 2021.
Description of the Position:
We are looking for a colleague to establish and lead a group that can promote experimental research in coastal and marine ecosystems. This is expected to be achieved through active pursuit and acquisition of independent and external research funding. Through this position the department wants to further strengthen research in coastal and marine food web ecology, focusing also on nature-based solutions and innovation aspects.
In the position, collaboration with the Marine Research Centre in Kerteminde will be encouraged. We also encourage the candidate to collaborate with other research groups at the Department of Biology, the Faculty of Science, and SDU in general, together with international collaboration.
This position has teaching duties related to the Biology programme (BSc and MSc), including the supervision of project, Bachelor, MSc and PhD students. Course teaching is expected for example in marine and coastal ecology, general ecology and zoology. Teaching related to other educational programmes (e.g. climate adaptation) at the department may also be possible.
About you:
About us:
The Department of Biology (approximately 150 employees) conducts a wide range of research within the broad and diverse field of biology. Our research is organized in five research groups focusing on more specific, but still diverse, disciplines and biological focus areas. The department’s current research groups are: Sound and Behaviour - focusing on neuroscience, communication and behaviour; Nordcee - focusing on biogeochemistry of Earth systems; Ecotoxicology - focusing on environmental effects of anthropogenic chemicals, especially endocrine disrupting chemicals, and materials (e.g. plastics); CPop-Biology – part of SDU’s interdisciplinary centre on aging and demography; and Ecology - focusing on the assessment, protection and reestablishment of ecological and ecosystems processes in a changing world.
The Ecology Group, the research group that the successful applicant for this position will join, holds projects funded by EU funds, national funds and private foundations. These projects include aquatic habitat recovery involving freshwater and estuarine restoration, coastal realignment, development of innovative coastal and marine methods for improvement of the ecological status, nutrient cycling, reestablishment of lakes and buffer zones along streams, phosphorus recovery from the environment, and effects of climate adaptation and urban discharge on the environment. Furthermore, stakeholder engagement is a key focus in the group.
Research at the department is characterized by using state-of-the-art technology, methodologies and facilities in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary ways to address scientifically and societally relevant biological questions and challenges at local, regional and global scales.
The department is responsible for teaching in the Bachelor and Master programmes in Biology and a new interdisciplinary one-year Danish Master’s programme in Climate Adaptation. Teachers at the department also contribute to other teaching programmes (e.g. pharmacy, audiology) at the University.
At the department, staff and students develop collaborative networks both within and outside the department as they conduct research. These collaborative efforts foster the sharing of ideas, techniques, and technologies, thereby greatly increasing research potential and productivity. The department believes in fostering a stimulating and inspiring environment for both staff members and students.
