Odense M
A full-time position as Postdoc is vacant at the Research Unit of Clinical Microbiology, Department of Clinical Research (KI), Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Odense University Hospital (OUH).
The position is expected to start October 1, 2021 or soon thereafter and is limited to two years with the possibility of extension depending on the project's success.
Research tasks
The postdoc will be engaged in an ambitious, cross-disciplinary project aiming to develop a novel in vitro model of the human intestine. Part of the research will focus on the technical design and development of an anaerobic flow chamber. Another part of the job will consist of culturing intestinal epithelial cells in the the anaerobic system and co-culturing with intestinal bacterial microflora. The research will be conducted using the model developed in the project to elucidate intestinal infections with bacteria such as Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli, Clostridium difficile, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci.
The postdoc will be a central researcher in a collaborative effort between medical doctors and molecular microbiologists at Odense University Hospital and the University of Southern Denmark. The consortium seeks to elucidate the pathogenesis of infection by important intestinal pathogens that constitute a significant problem, especially in the hospital setting.
The postdoc will be associated with the Clinical Biofilm Group, University of Southern Denmark.
Expectations of qualifications
We are looking for a technically skilled person with a background in molecular biology or a person with a relevant engineering background that has some experience in cell culturing/microbiology.
The applicant must have a Ph.D.-degree and must have documented research experience in one or more areas relevant for the research described above, i.e. flow chambers/microfluidic chips, working with sensors, advanced cell culturing, in vitro cell culture infections, biofilms. Experience with advanced microscopy techniques (CLSM, fluorescence microscopy) is an advantage.
Importantly, the applicant must be able to work independently and built his/her own experimental laboratory setups, to be innovative and to have good trouble-shooting abilities in his/her experimental work.
The postdoc will work together with medical doctors and researchers who have substantial experience with co-culturing epithelial cells and bacteria, as well as using flow cells for this culturing, including biofilm growth.
There is a good basis for publications, due to already established methods by the research group in this area and a strong consortium. In addition, the project will be expected to lay the basis for patents through collaboration with the SDU Research and Innovation Organisation.
The basic qualification requirement for appointment as postdoc is a Ph.D.-degree.
