The Danish Center for HADAL Research in Nordcee/Department of Biology at University of Southern Denmark seeks applicants for a three-year PhD position to investigate the biotic and abiotic controls on microbial organic matter degradation in deep-sea pelagic and benthic ecosystems, down to hadal depth (i.e. 6000 to 11,000 m of depth). This project emerges from the discovery that a substantial amount of surface-derived or laterally-advected organic matter is funneled down to the deepest oceanic sediments, sustaining a higher microbial activity than previously expected. The processes that control the degradation of organic matter in hadal environments, however, are still poorly understood.
The themes of the PhD project would include (but not be limited to): 1) Studying rates of enzymatic degradation under hadal conditions; 2) Determining how increasing hydrostatic pressure influences the degradation of organic matter; 3) Linking effects of pressure on enzyme activities to changes in gene transcriptional regulation or shifts in microbial community composition and functional potential; and 4) Studying the role of microbial viral infections for the cycling of organic matter at great depth. The questions will be addressed in synergy with another incoming PhD student studying microbial respiration in the deep sea.
The PhD student will be expected to work both independently and as part of a larger research network within the HADAL Center, and the PhD project also has strong synergies with parallel PhD projects at the centre. The PhD project will consist of a combination of lab- and field (research cruise)-based approaches, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for microbiological, biogeochemical, molecular, and high-pressure work. Specific equipment/ methodologies pertinent to the project may include, but are not limited to: fluorimetry, chromatography, microscopy, flow cytometry, spectroscopy, high pressure vessels, and bioinformatics with amplicon and/or meta-omics data.
While some planned work will rely on natural environmental samples with complex microbial communities, opportunities exist to utilize cultured deep-sea microbial isolates. Experience with any of these technologies is preferred. A background in microbiology, biogeochemistry, marine science, environmental chemistry, or a related discipline is desired. Training on all required aspects will be provided at the centre.
The HADAL Center offers a vibrant, diverse, and international group of scientists, with rich opportunities to collaborate with scientists within and outside of Denmark, either through co-supervision and/or research visits. The HADAL Center is embedded within the Nordcee division of the Department of Biology, which collectively employs approx. 50 researchers, administrative staff, and graduate students. The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark values diverse perspectives and identities, prioritizes the professional and personal growth and well-being of students and staff members, and strives to sustainably carry out scientific research with close societal involvement.
The deadline to apply is 15 November 2021, with a flexible start date in early 2022. For questions or other inquiries, please contact Professor Ronnie Glud at [email protected].
